Hi, I had the same thing. I got a white screen in the corner with my name@computername and then the$prompt . With me it happened after downloading KDE4 and the upgrade to KDE4.1. I had program names as login names and in the end I just reinstalled Kubuntu with KDE3.5 again and I will not touch it until I know 4.1 is stable.

If you are using Hardy don't log in to your normal kernel. Boot into Recovery. That has an option to "Try to recover X Server." Try that.

please help some body!!!!! , after i update my ati driver to 8.9 I cannot any more login in kubuntu, first i have problem with compiz (white screen) after i try to fix xserver i got a black screen , i reboot and now i cannot log in after splash screen i got just prompt command, please somebody help me, but with step by step because i am the new one in kubuntu, thank's for your attention
