You joking? If not, it's from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" . HAL 9000 is the AI computer that operates the space capsule. The humans detect issues with it and try to shut it down. It perceives this threat...

      ...now go watch the movie!

It's from 1968 so probably a generational gap

Never seen it! OMG!! It came out on April 2, 1968. Where have you been! hehehehe And like oshunluve said, you should watch it! A Stanley Kubrick classic, and likely one of the best movies ever made.

The imaginings of pop culture, for sure!
Both the author and director deny it -- even saying if they noticed that, they would have changed the name of HAL (heuristic algorithm).
But it is a low-probability synchronicity, isn't it? (IBM was a consultant to the film)

(I had to lean on Gemini to help me remember some details here ...)

it's entirely possible that consultants at IBM came up with it as an easy way to refer to their work for the film (lets call him HAL for short) and the film guys just ran with it.

sneaky bastards at IBM would have done something like that.

Keep in mind the year this movie was made. The attention to factual details (there is NO sound in space!) by Kubrick are exemplary IMO. Again, one of the greatest movies EVER produced.

Yeah... My dad used to tell me how good the movie was when I was a kid, so when I was about 16 years old (1992), we went out and rented it. I liked most of it... but it gets REALLY obscure when Dave "ascends" to a higher life-form, and it's like 20 straight minutes of "mind-blowing" (by 1968 standards) special effects with no reference as to what the hell is actually going on... Anyway, I pinned that on the generation gap when I was 16 years old.

It was interesting enough for me to go read the books, 2001, 2010, and 2061 (2063) by Arthur Clarke. Now, those were GOOD.

But what is fun, is that I have a friend named David. And I love looking at him and saying "I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

I'll agree it's a bit slow. Like 1/3 of it is more symphony than content, lol

I never liked "The Wizard of Oz." Watch what happens to people when you say things like that...
I mean, I understand it's contributions to cinema, and it's use of color film, etc. I didn't care for Gone With the Wind either...
But I acknowledge being a front-runner with color film and the like. I just didn't feel like 2001, Gone with the Wind, and Wizard of Oz were very good movies.

But movies like "Citizen Kane," "The Maltese Falcon," and "Casablanca," I very much enjoyed. One of my absolute favorites from the "Classic Era" is Hitchcock's "Rear Window."

It's a hilarious stance too... People make the same distinction with Avatar (2009). They say things like "It's not a very good movie... people only like it for the special effects." And I have to reply, EXACTLY!!! That's the only reason people liked Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz! So, you can be critical about a modern movie, but not an oldie? Whatever...

Anyway, back to the point of this thread.

From what I can see coming with AI more than anything like Code or Image Generation, is the way we interact with computers. Instead of having to use a bunch of commands to make a directory, move all of your .PNG, .JPG, .BMP (insert your favorite image extension here) to that director, figure out how to sort them all by date, and then look for photos of last christmas... You'll be able to say to your computer: "Hey Computer, can you move all of my photos to a new folder, sort them by date, and then show me pictures of the family from last Christmas?"

And it will do it for you.

That type of interface will be faster than point & click, and even faster than using the terminal. Of course, right now speed is a factor, but a few generations down the road, it that won't be a thing.

Imagine, instead of a graphics card for games, you had an AI processor that could generate 120 frames per second, based on your immediate input, and all you had to do was tell it: Hey, AI, I want to play a game where I am the hero and I have to (save the princess, kill the aliens, win the war, etc.)

What we are worried about is the AI "taking over" aspects of our lives. I mean... even without AI it's going south. When was the last time anyone went into a Taco Bell... they don't even have people to take your order anymore. They just point at the order kiosk, and look at you like you're stupid.
