You joking? If not, it's from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" . HAL 9000 is the AI computer that operates the space capsule. The humans detect issues with it and try to shut it down. It perceives this threat...

      ...now go watch the movie!

It's from 1968 so probably a generational gap

Never seen it! OMG!! It came out on April 2, 1968. Where have you been! hehehehe And like oshunluve said, you should watch it! A Stanley Kubrick classic, and likely one of the best movies ever made.

The acronym HAL is one letter away from IBM. On purpose or accident?

The imaginings of pop culture, for sure!
Both the author and director deny it -- even saying if they noticed that, they would have changed the name of HAL (heuristic algorithm).
But it is a low-probability synchronicity, isn't it? (IBM was a consultant to the film)

(I had to lean on Gemini to help me remember some details here ...)

it's entirely possible that consultants at IBM came up with it as an easy way to refer to their work for the film (lets call him HAL for short) and the film guys just ran with it.

sneaky bastards at IBM would have done something like that.
