Re: No update notifications since upgrade

Yesterday I did a fresh install of the 64b KK final release. Within 30 minutes I got a notification of updates and security fixes. This was after the install procedure checked on line for updates and stuff and installed them.

I also noticed something else... The LiveCD that I used was one I burned a week ago. The ISO passed the md5sum test and so did the CD itself.
I used it to create a 64b KK LiveUSB stick on a friends year old HP dvt6 laptop. The creation went beautifully, even though it was the first time I had created a LiveUSB using the LiveCD that was running the HP, while it was running the HP !!

Anyway, I booted that LiveCD in this Sony notebook. It took 5 minutes before it began to initialise the 3D screen. Meanwhile, it was throwing all sorts of sr0 read errors, block errors, can't find xxxx errors. It was looking awful. I aborted the process. I thought that perhaps the CD had been scratched but the surface was pristine. So, I ran another md5sum check on the LiveCD. Normally, it takes about 250-300 seconds to do an md5sum on a CD. This check was going on for almost 10 minutes. I was about to abort it when the check completed and reported an accurate md5sum value!.

After a moment's reflection I realised that I had burned that LiveCD on my Acer laptop. I burned a new LiveCD using this Sony and it checked out on both md5sums, the CD check taking only 268 seconds. Rebooting, the LiveCD flashed through the boot process and gave me a desktop within a couple of minutes.

Moral: LiveCD work best in the burner they were burned in. AND, LiveUSBs are more reliable on any machine that can boot from the USB port.

Oh, usbautomount did not install from the LiveCD and when I plugged in a USB stick or tried to find the other partition on this HD, I got zilched. Installing usbautomount from the repository fixed that.

I turn my Sony on every morning and shut it and the wireless off every evening. It's usually on about 15 hours per day.

Exactly, Both you and Vinny get your update notifications reliably. I and several others do not. It seems that the distinction here is that those who turn their laptop off get an update notification shortly after turning it back on, but those who don't turn it off never get one, or only get one, and then never again.

I'd be interested to hear from others who are not getting update notifications if they tend to leave their box on for extended periods of time?

Re: No update notifications since upgrade

I switch mine off multiple times a day and I have not seen an upgrade symbol since I installed 9.10 freshly. But then again, I have not waited so long for updates, I run aptitude quite frequently.

If Vinny now has working updates, that would mean that update-notifier-kde still handles some stuff... basically, update-notifier kde choked on the code in apt_check.py which never returns a resulting array with the number of updates.

I am not a programmer, so maybe I am very wrong... but I doubt if "run (options=None):" is nicely coded. I guess formerly an object was passed when calling run(...) and now that Kpackagekit should handle stuff, someone just deleted some lines and defined options as "None" as a quick 'fix'

Re: No update notifications since upgrade

I think your assumptions are off. Vinny's notifications are coming directly from KPackageKit, not update-notifier-kde. update-notifier-kde showed the old "Green Gear". While it is kinda goofy that update-notifier-kde shows that stupid error when you force it check for updates, I don't think that's related to why KPackageKit isn't showing the notifications it should.

IIRC Vinny made changes in a script related to update-notifier-kde to make it work... But let's ask Vinny... Vinny, how about that?

(If so... could Kpackagekit be waiting for input from update-notifier-kde about the small part of updates it is supposed to handle, so that Kpackagekit can integrate both numbers in one notification?)

Re: No update notifications since upgrade

I've been facing the same issue ever since i upgraded to 9.10 and i've been following this thread closely. Based on the info collected in the thread, here are my test results.

I was also not getting any update notifications even though Kpackagekit, synaptic and apt all reported updates.
Since i was planning to update my kde to 4.3.3, i added the repository and did the apt-get update which brought in the new packages. I waited about 4 hours for the the update notification to show up but didn't get any.
Then i restarted my computer and within 3 minutes, lo and behold, i get the notification which vanishes in a few seconds but i do get the 1 in the "i" and clicking on it shows me the new KPackageKit update notification.

I will proceed with the update and since i usually keep my computer running, i'll see if i get the next notification when something updates.

No Sr I havent changed a thing at all ...................my originall install on this box was 9.04 and the mediabuntu stuff ALL of it.... rite after install... at that point evey thing work just fine for me but being the cureus cat that I am I allso added Gnome .........then when kde 4.3.3 became ready thru the backports ppa I did that ....wile still in 9.04
agin that was panless and worked just fine as well.
then about a month or so befor 9.10 karmic wint relece I upgraded to it over the net with
                    Code:
                    update-notifier-kde -u
                    and it wint just fine.

then I reenabeld the mediabuntu and backports in my sorses list's
                    and did the
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrad
thing got the eveything up to date and as usuall everthing was fine.
Thrue all the upgrades all the setings I HAD done (sutch as desktop affects wallpapers widget's and the sutch ) held thar place and came thrue the upgrade's without falure.

I think at first upgrading to karmic I wasent shure if the update notifier was working right but by the the time it got down to the last 2-3 upgrades befor karmic whint relece it WAS working hear.......

as to the kind of updates it will show I do beleve it has showen me all kind from securety to bugfix ....

my sorce list's look like this.

OK, for me at least it's cinched. After all this time of receiving no notifications, today I saw that I had 6 updates waiting. Just before leaving the house I rebooted. When I arrived back home (about 4 hours later) waiting for me in the "i" was a "1" and when I clicked on it, up came the update notification. I was going to create a launchpad bug, but I noticed some similar ones out there and none of them have even been assigned to anyone so it seemed like a waste of time.

I'm just happy I understand the problem now even if I don't really have a fix.

It's not only a Kubuntu issue. I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 on this laptop (a brand new Sony VGN-NW21MF) two weeks ago when I bought this laptop, and have not seen an update notification once.
Since Plasma keeps crashing for about a week now, I installed ubuntu-netbook-remix via the Terminal. Now I log in into the UNR for about a week now, and I also get no update notifications on UNR. Only when I do sudo apt-get update, Update Manager says there are updates.

So it's not only Kubuntu, it also happens on the UNR.

Oh, and this laptop is on for at least 5 hours a day, in weekends for at least 12 hours.

so I reboot and within 5min hear thay are in the notification widget!!!!!

so it would seam that whatever pases the info to notifiy to the notification and job widget ONLEY dose it at boot and not on eney other sort of time scedual.......this should be fixed!
