Great stuff, a combination of the two above posts sorted it out, many thanks.
I stopped the GUI, but just deleted the two files, rebooted & now everything's back to normal. And now I finally know what tilde ~ means ! Once again thanks for everyone's efforts

Ok, here's a blow by blow account of how I did it. Hopefully it will be of some use to other new users if they accidentally remove the 'taskbar' and 'system tray' or want to restore the desktop to how it was when 8.10 was originally installed. Or even if you think you've 'fiddled' with too many 'widgets'

1. Stop the graphical interface : Press CTRL+ALT+F4

2. Log in, and stop the KDM service with this command :

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop

3. Delete the two files which control your customised desktop settings with these commands :

sudo rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc

sudo rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc

4. Restart the machine. I used this command :

sudo reboot

5. Sit back with a smug look on your face, and pour yourself a brandy

I find that issuing the command rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma* and rebooting does the trick. I just had to do that for kde nightly excepting of course the command is rm ~/.kde-neon/share/config/plasma*

Restoring the bottom panel - request help.

I tried to locate the directories .kde/share/config and delete the plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc files.

I could not !!

May be in Kubuntu 12.04 LTS the above files are placed else where and not in the specified directories anymore.

There must be a command in terminal mode to restore the bottom panel and delete these plasmarc and plasma-appletsrc files instead of searching the entire 1TB drive for such information.

Can you give me a way out to do this in terminal mode easily ?

Should anything "untoward" happen to your panel have a look at ~/.kde(4)/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc - the panel itself is classed as a containment (there are at least two, the desktop and the panel) which is home to all the different widgets you put there...

Reset only the plasma desktop

1) Stop the plasma:

kquitapp plasma-desktop

The applications that are not using the plasma-desktop are still working: Krunner (Alt+F2), Dolphin, Konqueror, Konsole, ...

2) Rename the plasma config files:

~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc

3) Restart the plasma:

plasma-desktop

This should reset the plasma-desktop to the default.

[SOLVED] Bottom Panel Restored by this Termical coding method.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your swift response to my request. The Bottom Panel has been restored but I guess the following sequence should also be mentioned for other users to follow:

1. In Dolphin under "Control" menu the "Show hidden files/directories" must be checked under "Home" directory only then can one get access or view to .kde/share/config path. KDE keeps all configuration related files hidden under "Home" directory which needs to made "Unhidden" first before making changes or restoring changes back to original state.

2. Also this path was not readily visible unless the above menu was checked and one is made to search all locations where "KDE" or "KDE4" is located and it is confusing as multiple copies of "Plasma*" files are found in different locations and it is not known for what reason the system is keeping it thta way. It is confusing.

3. KDE forum must explain somewhere where important files are stored and how the similar problems can be resolved easily using the Terminal mode as explained by you.

4. The KDE forum must be more user friendly for KDE users and have these topics with problems solved section neatly placed for users to get to read them. This has not yet happened and users are still in the dark once such problems do occur.

5. Anyways, thanks to your important and prompt response and a little intelligence from me to locate hidden directories without which it could not have been resolved.

Thanks to this Kubuntu forum as well which helps users like us.

Which is also my preferred way to access hidden files. Many apps, if not all of them, make their config files hidden under the home account. Keeping "show hidden files" checked clutters up the Dolphin file & directory listings, and if sorting is on one has to navigate quite a ways down the list to see the visible files.

A bit of a side-bar, but one of the first things I do to a new install is add a Hidden Files button to Dolphin. Then files and directories are a single click away and easily hidden when no longer needed.
