Thats a good question, the regular interval would be to tag on the last
thursday of this month (so August 27th) and release on first tuesday (so,
            September 1st).

This should work for me, I have most likely the time to do it.

Are there any comments? should we delay one or two more weeks? There have been
a LOT of commits in 4.3 branch, so I don't see a strong reason for delaying.

Please speak up now, otherwise I'll go ahead and announce this on saturday.

            Hi,

I've just uploaded the first set of 4.3.1 tarballs. kde-l10n are still being
generated, there will be one additional language here. I'll upload them
            tonight.

not done any testing yet, please report any major errors you'll find.

              Firefox Browser Installer II

After todays python upgrades the kubuntu-firefox-installer is working.

So: K > Applications > Internet > Firefox Browser Installer... clicking Install.

The KPackageKit is telling that it is dowloading additional packages -- 62 of them .

... after a moment: firefox successfully installed.

              K > Applications > Internet > Firefox

The installer is installing the Firefox 3.5 BUT as the default is to install recommended packages /1/ it will install lot of crap (gnome-doc-utils, libgnome2-common, etc... those 62 packages).

              /1/ > 9.04 Releasenotes
              Recommended packages installed by default

In accordance with the Debian Policy Manual (which says "The 'Recommends' field should list packages that would be found together with this one in all but unusual installations"), the package management system now installs packages listed in the Recommends: field of other installed packages as well as Depends: by default. If you want to avoid this for specific packages, use apt-get --no-install-recommends; if you want to make this permanent, set APT::Install-Recommends "false"; in /etc/apt/apt.conf. Be aware that this may result in missing features in some programs.

(This change was made in Ubuntu 8.10.)

KDE 4.3.1 packages are flowing into karmic repos. Once again, hold the upgrade until you can get all of them (which can, according to previous experience, take a few days). Otherwise KDE will likely break.

                    Known issues

As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Karmic Alpha 5. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:
                    • Users in some timezones will find that their filesystems must be checked (fsck) immediately after install due to a bug in the installer's clock handling. Investigation of this issue is ongoing, and we expect it will be resolved in Alpha 6.
                    • When using the OEM installation option, the desktop fails to come up after reboot for some users. Investigation of this issue is ongoing.
                    • The OEM installer is reported to not correctly set up the end user account in Alpha 5. Investigation of this issue is ongoing.
                    • Due to a bug in the python-boto package, when running ec2-run-instances to launch an EC2 instance you must pass an additional --user-data x option to the command. This bug will be fixed for Alpha 6.
                    • The virtual kernel image has been built without virtio drivers, so installing using the "minimal virtual" option from the Ubuntu Server Alpha 5 will result in an unusable system after reboot. This problem also affects users of the linux-image-virtual kernel package who have installed from earlier alphas. Users are advised to wait until Alpha 6 before installing or upgrading.
                    • Installation of an LTSP server using the alternate CD in Alpha 5 will be incomplete because some recommended packages are not installed. This bug will be resolved for Alpha 6. As a workaround, users can install the pulseaudio-esound-compat and dhcp3-server packages after installation.

                    • Konqueror by default
                    • Message Indicator

                    • OpenOffice KDE integration

                    Known Issues
                    • The Kubuntu Netbook Edition is missing the "install" icon on the desktop. You can start the installation from the menu.
                    • The Kubuntu Netbook Edition image does not install under Windows (with wubi).

                        More Options

From the KDE 4.2 onwards it has been possible to choose between the traditional and the plasma notifications > today's tip: turning off the fancy schmancy notifications in the panel. The KDE 4.3 has the config dialog for this (System Tray Settings).

With the > kdebase-workspace 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu2 there is another option: The Ayatana notifications /1/.

/1/ > Ayatana notifications for Plasma
                        Introduction

The idea of this patch is to provide an alternative experience for passive notifications (aka without actions) in Plasma, while retaining the current interface for active notifications.

When “Lighter passive notifications” is enabled in the configuration of the system tray plasmoid, passive notifications appear in the top-right corner, and are queued: if three notifications come at the same time, they are displayed one after the other to reduce spamming. These notifications use the Plasma tooltip background so that they are well integrated in the desktop, while looking “lighter” than the regular notifications. The notifications smoothly fade in on start and fade out when done. They also fade out when moving the mouse over them...

Scott James Remnant: This is perfectly normal, and is to be expected.

We're running a GIT HEAD version of udev to do some testing, the warnings will be fixed with udev upstream next week and result in the udev 147 release proper.

Klaus Doblmann: Yes it is, as alpha 6 will be out today and the bug will be fixed next week.

I have an outstanding action to draft an updates policy for Kubuntu and
take it for the tech board for approval. The two questions are what to put
in -updates and what to put in -backports.
                            ...
                            Here is what I propose:

New KDE versions (e.g. 4.3/4.4) only in PPAs.

Micro-version updates for KDE to -proposed/updates if we have upstream
supoort (we did for Intrepid and will for Karmic/Lucid and do not for
                            Jaunty).

Micro-version updates for KDE to backports otherwise.

No backports of major Qt updates.

I think we need to do some experimenting with the idea of micro-version Qt
                            backports.

The backports aspects of this don't need tech board approval. I'd like to
push KDE 4.2.4 to Jaunty backports ASAP and then look at giving Qt 4.5.2 a
                            go.

If people generally agree with this approach, I'll draft up something for
tech board approval for 4.3/4.4 in updates for Karmic and Lucid.

                              Hello,

It has come to my attention that two pieces of software that we had assumed
would have stable releases by now have now. We need to decide what the best
decision would be to handle this situation...

Kaffiene, which has replaced Dragon Player as the default media player...

                              K3b I'm a bit less dead-set about....

That thread was extremely interesting to me (a non-developer) in showing the considerations that go into even seemingly trivial decisions about what winds up on the CD. All of my initial feelings about what they should include and what they shouldn't had to be reconsidered as the thread went on.

                                Thanks.
