    Has my system been compromised?

I am running Kubuntu 24.0.4.1 with kernel 6.8.0-106-generic. On Wednesday 25th of March there was a download of aprrox 1.1GB
while accessing a few pages with Palemoon 34.1.0. Discovery had already installed updates. Does Kubuntu ever download updates or anything else this big without asking permission or showing some indication on the screen of what it is doing? Or has my system been compromised, Palemoon perhaps? I always login in to Standard User account and never click on links in email, etc. Thanks for any help I receive.

    More information is needed.

How did you learn of the download aqnd the size? Where did it go? Can you see what it is?

Any strange appliocations running? That is a more liikley sign of something bad happening, but often would need to have your permission to run to begin with.

Software installed as a a snap will self-update in the background, but 1.1Gb is quite a lot, even for that or other updates, unless it has been a while since the last time you used Kubuntu or updated it. Or have a lot of user-installed softwarte updates. But this size is not unusual for a very large desktop upgrade, or a LOT of updates buiding up over weeks or longer. I have seen big Libreoffice updates or from-scratch installs take close to 1Gb, for example.

Check your settings to see if it set to download apt-based updates in the background, in the Software Sources tool. Get there by opening the Driver Manager, or running sudo software-properties-qt in Konsole.
