    Kubuntu 25.04 switch to X11?

    I am using Kubuntu 25.4 on a Surface Pro 5, with Surface-Linux. I cannot figure out how to get a working virtual keyboard that has the Ctrl, Alt, and Direction keys so i can use it for the Terminal. Maliit works, but it is no good for use in the terminal, without those keys.

    I notice that on the login screen, bottom left I can change option from Wayland to X11. I tried that several times, but it always just halts after i enter my password and hit enter. Only restarting will bring be back to the login screen. Do I need to do something to make x11 an option for Kubuntu login? I am hoping that if I set it to x11, then I can install a good virtual keyboard like onboard. Unsure if there are gotchas if going this way.

    Thank you
    David

    I had success running Onboard in Kubuntu 25.04 Wayland session.

    I installed Onboard trough Discover. Then I run it from Konsole:

    GDK_BACKEND=x11 onboard

    Edit:
    Onboard works for my Opera browser. It does not work with the terminal and other things. But I hope it is somewhat useful to you.

    Edit#2:

    Apparently this way it works for all apps that run under xWayland. My Opera browser for example. Also Steam works too.

    Edit#3:
    For the keystrokes to work on the terminal I had to change the key generator under Onboard preferences.

    I explained it here:
