    Audio device not working suddenly

    Hi,

I have been trying for a while now to get the onboard audio on my PC to use the front jacks and had been through numerous threads about manually setting what kind of card it was to make it use all the jacks correctly. My problems began then, as I was unable to work out exactly which option to select for my card, even with the long list of possible types of configurations. Nothing broke, but nothing got better.

A week or so on and I get messages saying the audio device is not working properly and my audio does nothing except the start up and shut down sounds. Even test sounds don't come out despite the fact something has to be working to do the start up and shut down sounds.

Now I've been doing tech support for years, but this I just am clueless at, so I'm admitting defeat and hoping someone here can simply tell me what to set to what.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M750SLI-DS4 and it has 6 jacks at the back and two at the front for audio.

    I am running Kubuntu 10.04

Thanks in advance for any help at all.

If you have an external amplifier (I use a radio with an "aux" input), use the headphone jack. The other front jack (on both Dell and HP computers) is for microphone input.

Could be card setup, could be Pulseaudio, could be bad mixer settings.

Here's some posts that seem relevant:

I would start by removing PulseAudio completely and see if it works better without it. Check mixer settings and enable all channels and tick all capture boxes. Then dig into hardware settings.

Thanks. I had actually just arrived at the 'strip out Pulse first' conclusion but good to have it suggested again. Will dig around and see if I can get it even slightly better behaved.
