    USB malfunction

Anyone seen this happen? I updated my kernel 4 days ago. I suspect that this behavior is a regression to a bug reported three years ago, and in Feburary of Last year, just before my updated kernel was released. Rebooting sometimes help but USB, and Bluetooth is very erratic.
    Code:

Curious if you've tried a different kernel? Quick search looks like this is a UEFI vs. xchi_hcd issue. I'm on 4.13 and not seeing this.

I tried 4.13 (because it was Intel proof) but then I couldn't get my NVidia 650M card to configure. I am going to have to play around with some kernels. This laptop is 6 years old and I'm beginning to suspect that it is starting to slide out of the bottom of the compatibility window.

        USB malfunction

I begin experiencing troubles with my USB 3.0 active hub, which had 6 ports that could be individually turned on & off with buttons. I unplugged it and all my xchi_hcd issues went away. As a bonus, my boot time, which had been 170 sec, dropped to 40, and my shut down time, which had been 60 sec, dropped to 5.

I have a 4 port passive USB 3.0 hub on the way.

I ordered a 4 port passive USB3 hub to replace what I thought was a broken 6 port active USB3 hub.

The passive hub from orinco is listed as Linux compatible and several comments in the Amazon link attest to it, but it gives me the same problems as the active hub, which I now assume is not broken.

Essentially, all USB3 sticks plugged into either hub are mounted as a SATA drive on /media/root. That means that KPartitionManager cannot see it as a removable drive, so I can't format it or use it to make a LiveUSB stick. Also, when I reboot, my BIOS cannot see it either, so F12 doesn't list it as a possible boot drive, even with the boot flag on the stick set. Also, as I continue to use the USB3 stick in the USB3 active or passive hub the xchi_hcd errors begin to pile up and pretty soon the USB3 functionality dies.

If I unplug the hub and plug a USB3 stick into the USB3 port where the hub was plugged into THEN the USB3 stick is seen as a removable device and KPartitionManager sees it. IF I plug a USB3 stick into a port on my USB2 active hub it is seen as a removable device and I can boot from it.
