    Converting MP4 to DivX

I wish to play a video file on my TV (PAL), it seems only to recognise the DivX format.
    My source file is .mp4
I've no doubt that ffmpeg will do the conversion, but which settings will give the right format?

    Kubuntu 12.10

      Convert with the media player

(Tested Kubuntu 12.10 + VLC media player 2.0.5 Twoflower (revision 2.0.5-0-g1661b7d))

There are dedicated converters and editors but testing this with a media player.

The VLC media player can convert files.

      VLC > Media > Convert / Save.

Pick profile (note 1)- destination - start.

      Seems to work at here.

      From
      File name : Cyberpunk2077-extended.mp4
      File extension : mp4
      Format : MPEG-4
      Commercial name : MPEG-4
Format profile : Base Media / Version 2
      Internet media type : video/mp4
      Format : AAC
      Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
      Commercial name : AAC
      Format profile : LC
      to

      File name : Cyberpunk2077-extended.avi
      Video_Format_List : MPEG-4 Visual
      Video_Format_WithHint_List : MPEG-4 Visual (DivX 3 Low)
Codecs Video : DivX 3 Low
      Audio_Format_List : MPEG Audio
      Audio_Format_WithHint_List : MPEG Audio (MP3)
      Audio codecs : MPEG-2.5 Audio layer 3
      Note 1

You might need to add the wanted profile.

The mp3 audio could need the libavcodec-extra-53: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1999604

        MP4 to XVID

Here's a complete page of what I do (using mencoder), including subtitles, resizing, changing audio, and all kinds of things...

        http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Video_Conversion

XVID is the open-source version of DivX.

Right now the killer is being surrounded by a web of deduction, forensic science,
and the latest in technology such as two-way radios and e-mail.

Thank you for all of your replies but I am now more confused than ever. I was hoping to get to a single programme, that I did not have to add other bits and pieces to make it work. I think my Windows history is peeking in here. In any event, thank you all.
