Will create a new file /etc/sudoers.d/30-my_kdesession_env and append the the key env variables for sudo to keep when switching to root.
Thank you. Executed. Still in konsole, I typed sudo su - and entered my password and verified I 'was root' with whoami. Launched konqueror from the konsole. This is what I see.

I'm being hit with the "the process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" on a second launch of konqueror in a session (as root),,,,,Krusader seems unaffected by it

Launching with kdesudo konqueror (from the Desktop) is 'better'; I see the red icons in the tool bar, but still not displaying the home screen correctly.

And navigating anywhere results in "the process for the file protocol died unexpectedly" message at the bottom of the screen.

Yes, sudoers environment edits only work with sudo, kdesudo and kdesu (in sudo mode). cli su doesn't read sudoers.

          Start with 'kdesudo dbus-run-session konqueror'

            Start with 'kdesudo dbus-run-session konqueror'
            That works.

And, I can click on a folder and select Open With > Dolphin and Dolphin (or it's 'part') launches with root elevated privileges and doesn't die.

well I did that "one liner"(echo 'Defaults env_keep += "KDE_SESSION_VERSION KDE_FULL_SESSION"' | sudo tee /etc/sudoers.d/30-my_kdesession_env) and rebooted ,,,,,now Konqueror will start as root(kdesudo konqueror in krunner) multiple times no problems .

+ now I get the good start screen with icons ,,,but only in root mode ,,,,,in user mode no icons but a good background ,, I think setting root icon theme to oxygen did that...yup just changed my user icon theme to oxygen and now konqueror in user mode has the icons on the start screen.

              EDIT:screen shots are root mode

and all the icons are good .

              nice

dbus-run-session doesn't work for me. The icons are replaced by ugly place holders.

Did you run the onetime command kubicle provided?

No. When I navigated to any Places location, I got the protocol died error.

                              Try adding this to /etc/environment:

                              XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP="KDE"

That fixes the protocol died error when launching kdesudo dolphin from the Desktop. Thanks!
