California State Bill AB-1043 requires Linux to gather and share age data from users

In October 2025 California passed into law a requirement that ALL operating systems, including Linux gather personal information from users and to share that data with application developers by 1 January 2027. There are heavy financial penalties for non-compliance.

Anyone who develops operating system software or application software is directly affected and potentially liable.

There doesn't seem to be any limitations on what applications are affected.

It's going to create significant development and maintenance overhead, as well as financial jeopardy for anyone who develops software for other than self-use only.

on a positive note , this will be EXTREMELY difficult to enforce/monitor on a decentralised OS like Linux
