IME the nexus tablets tend to be so competitively priced to begin with that they don't drop in price much until the next generation is released.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10. I love it for several reasons. I suffer from a neurological disorder that has reduced me to typing with only one finger, and destroyed my ability to spell. My tablet is a life-saver. It allows me to write, completing words, correcting my spelling, and when I have no idea how to spell a word, I can speak the word into my tablet. I can no longer turn the pages of the newspaper, but I can easily read it on my tablet. I read books on the Kindle app. I'm teaching an online course, and I can do all my grading on the tablet. I can't imagine having a smaller screen. Videos are great. The screen is brilliant. I hardly go on my desktop anymore.
I used KDEconnect to transfer this post to my desktop. Very handy.Last edited by arist; Oct 28, 2014, 10:52 PM.

Question: can someone with an iThang report how easy it is to disable selective permissions on individual apps? Is it discoverable in a way that a non-technical user can understand what it does?
pretty easy.
it's pretty intuitive... what i believe is that when they make an apple product they really spend time and think about every single fuction and how to make it improve it, with andriod i found its all just dumped together with a bunch of unnecessary options.
i can only understand why people dislike apple because of rip off pricing, but in all other aspects ipad set a banchmark for all other tablets to match.
and to all apple haters, i do hope youve actually owned an apple device not just spreading schoolyard trash talkK 14.4 64 AMD 955be3200MHz 8GB 1866Mhz 6TB Plex/samba.etc.+ Macbook Air 13".

The single biggest reason I would never buy an iThing is that it restricts your software freedom. Obviously the OS is mostly non-free, but that's not even the biggest thing. Due to the additional T&Cs placed on software in the app store, in addition to those in the actual licence, you can't even get GPL software from there. If you're lucky enough to be the developer, or if you can persuade the developer to re-licence the app, then you can work around it... but are you really OK with apple dictating your choice of app licence and interfering with open source projects?
Regardless of whether you like the practical arguments ("open source") or ethical arguments ("free software"), if you choose apple you're worse off than what you're used to with Linux.Last edited by Feathers McGraw; Oct 30, 2014, 07:12 AM.

Can i just ask, when you said you setup an iPad for a relative, what exactly did you do? not that this would be a definition of intuitive, but i really want to know what is it that you had to setup?
my son wanted an Android phone, i listened to the young salesman give me the same arguments you just did,
then i asked, how do i benefit from this Open Source OS/software?
well, mumble mumble mumble. 700$ later, and he's happy with it. whatever.
furthermore, the Os restrictions of apple products is nothing new or unique,

seriously, all the tablets out there,
first they wanted to mach ipad's retina display, they did
then they wanted to match ipad's battery life , FINALLY THERE!,
just like the ipod..
except with ipod nobody came even close in producing an easy to use quality product... think microsoft Zune lol.. fail
now that we have achieved that goal lets turn around and dump **** on ipad .
because we are Open Source, and they are not lol
the catchup game will continue , and apple will continue to set benchmarks for people without a clue nor imagination
anyway, usubscribing from this thread, you get whatever tablet you like.
i did the android thing and it simply sucked to charge the tablet almost daily for some light use. i love my ipad, my iphone and my macbook so it pissess me off when people bag Mac products but have never actually owned one, at the end of the day its your loss.

IMO, the issues with Apple aren't the quality of the products or even the price:
1. Apple wants you to buy into their whole infrastructure (iTunes) or nothing totally works as advertised.
2. Apple is uses proprietary hardware (look at their chargers) and closed source software and locks everything down. It's Job's way or the highway - he was famous for that.
3. Apple uses slave labor, keeps their money off shore to avoid taxes, and doesn't contribute to the economies (through jobs or taxes) they most benefit from. Apple Inc. is a leach.
If you drink the Apple Koolaid and buy into their philosophy, fine - be a clone (aka "AppleTard"). It's your loss.
AppleTards spend all that extra money so they don't have to think or imagine a different way to do something.
p.s. Oh did you hear? The new iPhone has a big screen! Just like the one Samsung introduced in 2009! Yeah, they're such innovators.

You'll notice I didn't say that apple products were unintuitive, only that it's a difficult thing to be objective about. As an Android user, I found the "global layout" to be not at all obvious. If you're used to using Apple products then obviously it will be easy, same on Android devices. You're not born knowing how to use either, it's something you learn, and suggesting otherwise is dishonest.

Some people don't care about these things, and they use Apple products and are happy with them. Other people do care about the restrictions, and as a result choose not to use apple products. This is nothing new or unique.

I had an iPod classic and an iPod touch, and was often frustrated by the DRM that was such a key part of Apple's business model at the time, as well as Apple's deliberate attempts to prevent users from syncing with third party software. This was years and years before my "linux conversion", but it left a lasting impression.

Notice that the apple watches will require charging pretty much every day, but my original KickStarter edition pebble's battery easily lasts a week+ of normal use. Pebble stuck to doing the basics really well: remote notifications on your wrist, great battery life, waterproof, a screen you can see clearly in bright sunlight. As a result they created a product that is still very useful and competitive two years after its original shipping date.
Apple have gone first and foremost for appearance (slim and shiny screen = poor battery life), and as a result there will be lots of Apple fans walking around with a dead weight on their wrists in 2015.
