    Should I change my avatar?


    This morning, I received the following PM:

    Morning my friend , you should seriously consider changing your avatar please. God's name is not a toy and He should be respected. That statement is slander against Him and disrespectful.
    Since I couldn't even recall which avatar I had most recently changed to, I actually gave it some thought--and came up blank. I thought, did I change it to the "On the first day, God created Linux...and the rest was easy" avatar? No, I didn't think I had. Hmmmm...I said to myself. Then--to spare my brain cells any more work--I came here and looked at my avatar (which I'm posting here because I change them so often, looking at my sig tomorrow may no longer include it!):



    I scratched my head. I'm at a complete loss as to how my anti-windoze, pro-Linux avatar could offend anyone who thinks it has something to do with disrespecting God.

    So my question is, should I change it? Not that I wouldn't have in a few days anyway (I like variety--you should see my panel's constantly changing icons!).

    No, you should not change your avatar.

    And if someone is disrespectful (and even more than that), it is the very person who sent you that PM.

      I dont think I have ever seen a "disrespectful" avatar or anything elce in your posts or sig's ??

      and I read almost all your (and everyone elces) post's ........so I am confused as well.

      perhaps the sender of the PM could enlighten us as to what we have missed ??

        That is not a question that anyone on the forum should ever need to ask! I'm sure that if an overtly offensive avatar ever appeared, OS or one of the mods would ban the account promptly.

        p.s. I've never seen anything wrong with yours, or anyone else's.

        p.p.s. People with very thin skin should avoid online fora.

            IMO, if someone is so sensitive that your avatar offends them, they should stop going online and stay inside the house.

            No one is forced to visit this forum and they are free to not return. Same goes for TV stations and the like - if you don't like it - TURN IT OFF, but don't tell me what I can or can't read or watch (or have as my avatar )

              After I posted this thread, I saw that I had another reply to the original PM. Well, here's our exchange:

              Now about that motto I have... I'm sorry you're offended by it, but personally I don't find it to be disrespectful to God. Humorous, yes. Disrespectful, no.
              The funny thing is...I DON'T have that motto in my profile any more. I currently have "It's never too late to escape the Gates of hell"--and I think I've had that for quite some time. So is the PM's OP seeing a cached version (somehow) of my quote in my posts? (In case you're wondering, since I change things up so often it didn't occur to me until after I'd already replied that the quote he(?) is referring to isn't even in my profile right now.)

              You know, the other day, I actually debated whether to put my pro-Hillary Clinton design up as my avatar; I decided to go ahead with it because I know we're of all sorts of political persuasions here, and we're all adults, and I didn't think it would offend anyone. But then I took it down because I reconsidered its appropriateness on this forum. Based on the comments in this thread, it looks like I needn't have worried about it.

                I second dibl's response.

                The only things I would consider censoring is gratuitous vulgarity & porn, because this is a family site, and ad hominem attacks. Civility and tolerance is a hallmark of this forum and should remain so. i.e., Disagreeing without being disagreeable. How else can you learn the opinion of others if free and open exchange is not allowed?

                        If someone were to ask me what your avatar was or what message was beneath it, I couldn't answer. That's how much either matters to me or how much attention I pay. Keep doing what you do. I don't see how anyone could be offended. I'm more interested in what is in the center column of this page.

                          I haven't been offended by any of the avatars you've shown. I agree with all in that we can have very lively and spirited discussions here. I love it here.

                            Me too...which is why I've exercised restraint in my choice of avatars. I don't want to get banned.
