System Crashing - Whenever transcoding or optimizing in Plex

I thought I had an SSD over-heating issue - added heat sink - and that helped.

However - I just tried optimizing a video file on plex (which is running on this box) - and the system crashed immediately - no time for anything to heat up.

I guess it could be something to do with Plex causing an issue - but this really feels like some t ype of hardware issue.

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Boy, I had to zoom in on that pretty hard to read it

It is easier to just use the "copy details" button, in terms of readability.

    Some base questions:
How was plex installed? in a container (docker) or some other method?
Did you set it up for transcoding if necessary?

What do you mean by system crash? Did it kill everything and you need to reboot or log back into the desktop , or something else?

But yes, it is odd to have any sort of crash, it should just fail to transcode, I'd think, or fall back to software encoding. That is what Jellyfin in a container (podman) does for me.

You may need to look at Plex's logs to see what was going on.

Running a stress test might flush out memory problems. Like y-cruncher or Prime95.

Plex is installed directly on my desktop - not using docker.

The system 'locks up' almost immediately - I have to unplug it so that I can reboot. (

I have just turned off hardware transcoding... I'll see if that helps

Assuming Plex is the issue, you might get better info from the Plex forum or subreddit. This isn't necessarily a Kubuntu problem.

            Open Plex web UI
            Go to Settings - Transcoder
Disable "Use hardware acceleration when available" and Use hardware-accelerated video encoding
            save and try again

Yes, seems to be a Plex issue so I will look there. I ran the same video compression using handbrake with no issues so that pretty much isolates Plex as the problem. How can I close this topic?
