access to settings has changed after recent update

usually i'm able to access settings via krunner by typing "settings", but now the are two search results on my install

    there is:

System Settings - which is the usual giant settings page with things like "driver manager"

    but now there is:

Settings - which brings up some over simplified version of the plasma settings where nothing even shows in the main panel it just tells you to pick something from the list on the left.

    anyone else getting this?

      also, possibly related:

when i go to "driver manager" in settings and try to open the software manager, nothing happens after i enter my password

i have to instead, go to the terminal and use sudo software-properties-qt

      to access the dialog

Not me. Just the one System Settings.

anyone know what this is then?

            plasma-settings

this is what i get from apt list

            plasma-settings/noble,now 23.01.0-1build3 amd64 [installed]

i note that it is not marked as automatic, which would imply that i installed it... but i don't think i did.

should i just uninstall it then?

ah, its a dependent of plasma-mobile, which i have no need for, and is not installed ... don't know how that made it onto my machine

ok, so now i have a different problem.

access to the software-properties-qt still fails from the normal settings > driver manager route

i can access it with the command line but when i try to use the settings page i now get this (instead of nothing at all)

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_20260605_164904.jpg Views:	0 Size:	24.9 KB ID:	692582

when i run systemsettings in a terminal, i get this output from it starting up.

                Code:
kf.coreaddons: "Could not load plugin from /usr/share/kservices5/kcm_driver_manager.desktop: '/usr/share/kservices5/kcm_driver_man
ager.desktop' is not an ELF object"
kf.coreaddons.desktopparser: Error: Failed to open "kcms//usr/share/kservices5/kcm_driver_manager.desktop"
                QFileDevice::seek: IODevice is not open
kf.coreaddons: "Could not load plugin from /home/goo/kcms/usr/share/kservices5/kcm_driver_manager.desktop: The shared library was
                not found."
file:///usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/qml/org/kde/kirigami.2/ScrollablePage.qml:200:9: QML MouseArea: Binding loop detected for pro
                perty "width"
file:///usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/qml/org/kde/kirigami.2/ScrollablePage.qml:200:9: QML MouseArea: Binding loop detected for pro
                perty "width"
QQmlEngine::setContextForObject(): Object already has a QQmlContext

and then when i try to access the driver manager i get this additional output when closing the sudo password prompt

                Code:
                kf.su: [ ./src/suprocess.cpp : 158 ] Conversation with "sudo" failed.
also when running directly in a terminal sudo /usr/bin/kubuntu-driver-manager

                i get this

                Code:
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-root'
but it otherwise works as expected.

when i echo the variable mentioned i get this returned

                /run/user/1000

removing plasma-settings caused kup to stop working correctly so i've restored from timeshift to a time prior to the last kernel update that went from 29 -> 35

kup is now working on kernel 29 so i've allowed the pending upgrades to go thru

and once again this plasma-settings has returned... i'm going to leave it alone for now so that kup keeps working

but something is wrong with the 35 kernel as i still get the su failed error above when trying to access the driver manager thru systemsettings

                  any advice would be appreciated.
