Ohhh. I was reading yesterday there is an "upgradable" (mis-spelled?) that will show you what will be upgraded. I vaguely remember the full-upgrade, but I thought that disappeared around the same time apt-get was shortened to just apt.
PS Thanks again for the assistance. I just wish I could contribute, rather than ask/beg for help

Wow, I should have simply searched for the topic first instead of the basic troubleshooting, lol
I found this via the second search result for " lenovo v14iil ubuntu'

        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...0/comments/133

        https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Ubuntu/...page=2#5085872

There are videos on the topic, though not in English.

You will want to do this in each Linux you have installed

This *is* over a year old, so the kernel version here will be much newer, but it should be valid

It seems Elan touchpads are as much a butt-pain and random as Broadcom stuff , and a problem on Windows, by the looks of it

I don't know, claydoh, my HP Envy has an ELAN touchpad and has worked right since day one in K20.04. Even with an external Logitech mouse attached.

I am basing this on the sheer number of problems reported/mentioned/complained about, and quite a large number of bug reports on Launchpad. Some people needed a firmware update, an updated kernel with a fix, back when LTS was still on 5.4 others a bios update (Lenovo, to fix some bugered ACPI tables on some models), and others needed the boot parameter tweak. And this was just from one bug report

O.K., been through all the kernels that 20.04 has had to offer. No issues, zero, zip, nada. No arguing, but how can both be right - it doesn't work AND it does work?

                  PEBKAC?

Sorry. It's much more likely just to be MAGIC.

I was thinking this could be a hardware failure, as it didn't work in another distro, but I forgot it was apparently working on Windows. But simply searching for lenovo v14iil ubuntu brings up many results for 'my trackpad doesn't work', for multiple laptops models, lenovo in this case. Then scratching the surface and looking at some of the related bug reports, such as this long one, which I linked to above, involved numerous different models with Elan. Granted, the issues seems to have resolved for most, but I usually peek at the very end of these extremely long bug reports to see if any more recent comments might be useful.

And the Lenovo forum posts have multiple models with similar hardware.

You have one that has a trackpad version that is working correctly. I mean, there isn't just one Elan trackpad chip model.

And maybe this only affects some Lenovo specific implementations? I did not dig into other brands.

I, too, have a Lenovo/Elan combo which worked out of the box from day one; it's a bit sensitive but generally OK. As a rule of thumb, I wait for some time before wiping out Windows. For this one, I waited for 2 BIOS updates plus 2 months just in case. Then I let go of Windows.

Every piece of hardware in a laptop/PC/ etc., is connected to other pieces/parts. So it could be that the Elan touchpad in certain makes/models are connected differently from other makes/models. The touchpad drivers may be functionally the same in all cases, but differ in their hardware environment. The problem, then, would not be what it seems. So my HP and someone else's Lenovo could have the same Elan touchpad and the same distro, and the same driver, and behave differently. That's why I asked the question, but it's just a loose theory.
