Open a terminal and enter:
xrandr
The output will show us what resolutions are being supported. If you desire help with the issue, you need to supply enough information for someone else to help. Along with the results of xrandr, post the monitor and video card models at least. Just because your monitor supports a resolution doesn't mean everything else does.

Don't forget to check the cable. Not all HDMI cables support higher than 1080.
Video card info would help here as well.

I am using an Intel iGPU: Intel HD Graphics 4600
When my laptop was connected to my monitor through a HDMI to HDMI cable, I was able to get 2k@144hz...But then I bought a dock :https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This dock has a display port on it so I used a DP to HDMI cable to connect the dock to the monitor: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01...e?ie=UTF8&th=1

If the dock has DP, why not use DP? I had to drop my DP connection because my nVidia card failed and using HDMI on the Intel 530 (i7 built-in) I can only get 30hz at QHD+ (3840x1600) even though the monitor supports 75hz
