Without more information on your hardware, I'm out of ideas. Not much out there on the model of laptop. Good luck.

      Thanks!

The second link uncovered some new stuff. It seems that the synaptic driver must be used for the touchpad. This link seems to point to this being an xorg issue and that the only solution is to recompile xorg? Not sure how I would do that from a command prompt. Is that a good or bad idea to try?

This suggested using the synaptic drivers which the above link confirms as well. I tried
      #apt-get install xfree86-driver-synaptics
but it said that it was selecting xorg-driver-synaptics instead and was already using the newest version. I tried changing the driver to match the info listed on that page for the xorg and put it into my /root/xorg.conf.new and tested it. Still no mouse working.

Any more ideas based on this information?
