nVidia Proprietary Driver Issues - Good GPU, Poor Performace

    Hi,

Running Kubuntu 18.04 LTS 64Bit fully updated with a nVidia GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 GPU.

I loaded nVidia proprietary driver v415, but when I open "Driver Manager" it shows "Nouveau" being loaded?
Overall graphic performance of desktop is rather poor.
This is a new system build with fresh install of Kubuntu 18.04.
Exiting a full screen FPS game results in screen flickering and an unresponsive desktop

    Any ideas, thanks!

    Jesse

Go to: Settings -> System Settings -> Scroll down under Hardware and select Driver Manager. It'll take a minute, but will display the installed drivers and will probably show the Nouveau driver along with one or two Nvidia drivers. One of the Nvidia drivers will be indicated as "Recommended". Select the Nvidia driver and then the Apply button.

          I installed the v410 driver...

Where did you get the 410 driver?

read through /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for EE and WW regarding the nvidia driver.

run this command and paste the output here:

                Code:
                sudo apt install -s nvidia-graphics-drivers-410

                  You can also use
                  Code:
                  ubuntu-drivers
in konsole. There are a list of commands available
                  Code:
                  Available commands:
list: Show all driver packages which apply to the current system.
devices: Show all devices which need drivers, and which packages apply to them.
autoinstall: Install drivers that are appropriate for automatic installation.
debug: Print all available information and debug data about drivers.
and if Driver Manager doesn't work, ubuntu-drivers WILL work.

I confirmed the nVidia driver is in use and the Nouveau driver was unloaded in Xorg.0.log. Further, I have desktop effects in use and they appear normal.

The problem appears to be in System Settings or the Driver Manager.

First I would verify you've got everything installed needed for the nVidia driver to load, like the GL files, the dkms files, etc. Then select the driver and reboot. Then open nVidia Setting and see what it reports.

Never had any luck with the Nvidia card/drivers on Kubuntu.
Pulled the card and swapped it with a non-Nvidia card out of a Windows machine.
Then I found a command that purged anything with Nvidia in the name.
The windows machine is happy and the Kubuntu machine is happy.
                          I am happy.
