X is loading the Intel driver. You have an /etc/X11/Xorg.conf, which you really don't need with Intel graphics now. Something in there might be conflicting. Post it here, let's take a look.

        Added xorg.conf

Yes I added the xorg.conf in an attempt to fix the problem. The problem precedes the addition of the config file.

        Nevertheless here is the file.

        Code:
        Section "ServerLayout"
        	Identifier "X.org Configured"
        	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
        	Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"
        	Screen 2 "Screen2" RightOf "Screen1"
        	Screen 3 "Screen3" RightOf "Screen2"
        	Screen 4 "Screen4" RightOf "Screen3"
        	InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"

        EndSection

Hm. I have a machine with Intel graphics and desktop effects work fine. Here's my GLX info:

          Code:
          steve@x1:~> glxinfo
          name of display: :0
          display: :0 screen: 0
          direct rendering: Yes
          server glx vendor string: SGI
          server glx version string: 1.4
          server glx extensions:
              {...snip...}
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
          client glx version string: 1.4
          client glx extensions:
              {...snip...}
          GLX version: 1.4
          GLX extensions:
              {...snip...}
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 9.0.2
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
          OpenGL extensions:
              {...snip...}
My machine is using Intel's OpenGL renderer, which takes advantage of the hardware acceleration capabilities of Intel graphics. Your machine is using the Gallium software renderer. KWin requires hardware acceleration to draw effects with OpenGL. Now, your Xorg.0.log has some information about this:
          Code:
[ 3846.750] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
[ 3846.750] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[ 3846.757] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 3846.757] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0
          What's the output of
          Code:
          ls -al /dev/dri
I bet it doesn't exist, because these errors are also present:
          Code:
[ 3846.587] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 3846.587] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 3846.587] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
[ 3846.587] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory
Could you try this again with no xorg.conf, please?

Same result with no xorg.conf. But let me be clear. I do have desktop effects through xrender. But not all work and OpenGL cannot be enabled. Correct that I do not have dri in /dev.

For some reason, DRI/DRI2 aren't being enabled on your machine. Without this, you will be stuck with the software renderer. You're right that some of the effects will work with the software renderer, but quality and performance won't be so great.

Let's see if we can force the Intel driver to load everything correctly. First, a diagnostic step, please. Run the following, and show the output of the last command.
              Code:
              cd ~

              wget smxi.org/inxi

              chmod +x inxi

              ./inxi -xxG
              And the output of
              Code:
              dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-video

What I notice from the second output is that the intel driver is available. But from the inxi output, it is not loaded.

Do you load it with modprobe -i intel?

EDIT: Did a modprobe -i i915, but did not change output of inxi or ability to run OpenGL.

You're operating in the context of root while located in your ordinary user home directory. Generally this isn't a good idea because any files created will be owned by root:root. This is the cause of many problems. Better is to elevate with sudo only when necessary and for each individual command.

                  Now this...

What's happening is that the vesa driver isn't being unloaded and is taking over the graphics card. This is also confirmed in your Xorg.0.log log file; as I examine it more thoroughly, I don't see an "unload" statement for it.

modprobe is for kernel modules. We're dealing with X now, so we have to work differently. I will start with the gentlest of steps. Please run:
                  Code:
                  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-video-vesa

                  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-video-intel
Reboot, and see if you notice any difference. Don't forget to run the inxi -xxG command (not as root) both before the dpkg-reconfigure commands and after you reboot. I want to see the output for both situations.

PS got used to using su with Mepis and kdesu with the GUI, (alt-F2) run command. I need to adjust.

OK, hm. Next suggestion. Please create the following minimal /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:
                      Code:
                      Section "Device"
                              Identifier "My device"
                              Driver "intel"
                      EndSection
If this doesn't work, we'll have to get a bit rougher

Crap! What the hell is going on...your Intel graphics is not actually being recognized by the kernel, it would seem. You should be showing the i915 driver module in both of those. In other words, I was expecting to see this:

                              Code:
                              ...

                              ...

                                *-display UNCLAIMED
                                     description: VGA compatible controller

That would explain why X can't load the Intel driver.

Yet: i915 appears in your list of loaded modules, as indicated by the output of lsmod in your post #3.

Would you please attach /var/log/syslog. I want to see if the module throws any errors. This is a stumper!

Oh, wait... you are still using nomodeset, correct? If so, that's the problem. The Intel drivers (both kernel and X) require modesetting. They will not work without that. This would explain why your computer is falling back to vesa.
