    Hi Steve....

I could do that, no problem. But I'm wondering if the results would be skewed a bit having the OS installed on a VM as opposed to the traditional way. What do you think?

That's basically what my system already is. Haven't done a reinstall in several years. :-)

I seem to recall previous releases if installed on release date imediately had a lot of updates waiting. Is that because we are now holding back updates for the final?

And, another DA question. Is 12.04 that is regularly updated the same as 12.04.1 or 12.04.2?

        Just curious.

Well, I'll give it a shot anyway. I downloaded the .iso....turns out it was 10.04.4, so I'll start out with that release instead. Installing now using VirtualBox. Stay tuned....

EDIT: It's what I thought. VM's aren't the way to go on this. I was able to install 10.04 but after rebooting, it just hung...it wouldn't get past the blue Kubuntu screen. I'm not going to spend any time trying to diagnose the problem as I feel a regular install would produce better results anyway.

              Regards...

well the net-upgrade went off ok ......every thing seams alright so far except for file indexing went craze(continually showing high CPU usage in top) so I disabled it in system settings.
so this partition has been net upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 to12.04..........so far

Not sure what to think of that... Various distros of Linux have run fine in VMs for a long time. I wonder what's causing yours to hang?

                      Hi Steve....

I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04.4 a try and I was successful. It came up just fine after the initial reboot. I am now performing the upgrade to 10.10...

                        Hi all...

Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 successfully completed and appears to work fine. No errors or boot problems. Now proceeding to 11.04....

Not having seen Ubuntu or Kubuntu 10.10 before, I noticed very little difference between it and 10.04. The exit buttons "X" on the upper left hand side of the windows are now orange along with the the highlights to menu entries. The orange progress bar is shaped slightly different.

                        Stay tuned...

The only skewance would be the emulated bits of the hardware - video card especially (it tends not to support 3D graphics without the Guest Additions), hard drive controller, etc. But that's no more skewed than the variation between hardware in real systems.

I'm keen to see your progress!

                            Hi all...

I was able to successfully upgrade to 11.04 and it seems to work ok, although Unity will not display because of either the settings I've made in VB or because of VB's video driver or both. "Look and feel" is identical to 10.10, (Ubuntu Classic.) Right now, I'm having a problem attempting to upgrade to 11.10 using the update manager, which I've used up until now. I may need to command line this one....

EDIT: Never mind, the update manager finally kicked in and am now upgrading to 11.10. Since 10.04, I've noticed a decrease in performance. I'm not sure if it's caused by the update process or if these OS's require more system resources or something else.

@SecretCode: Thanks for letting me know that.

EDIT #2: Ok, 11.10 is installed and seems to be working properly. Very different looking this time, must be Unity that I'm looking at despite the low system resources. I will try 12.04 tomorrow.

EDIT #3: Ubuntu 12.04 has been installed and is working...albeit a bit slow. Mission complete.

                            Regards...
