Re: Kubuntu 11.04 sucks
An absolutely strange and almost unheard of event happened this afternoon.
A friend of mine was having trouble with his HP dv5 Entertainment laptop running VISTA and protected by Microsoft Security Essentials. He brought it over for me to look at. Sure enough, his Intel Mobile 4 Express Series Chipset video driver ifgrxserv.exe was replaced by a virus. The GPU load was causing the driver to continually eat up 50-60% of one of the CPU's and 15-30% of the other. It was making his external power supply overheat and stop working, forcing him to use battery. He could not recharge and use his HP at the same time without the power supply failing. Unfortunately, Intel offered no replacement or upgrade video drivers for the dv5 and recommended that we consult the HP website for the "latest drivers". We did. There was none to be had. I did a system restore to a previous point where the system was "known" to be working good. I removed the video icons from the system tray to take their service out of memory. It resulted in the CPU consumption reducing to 30-40% and 15-25%. Still not good, but better.
I always carry with me a USB stick containing Natty Narwhale with FireFox, mulimedia codecs, flash and quicktime preinstalled and KNetworkManager configured for my WPA secured wifi. I plugged it into his HP dv5 laptop and turned the power on. Within a couple minutes I was looking at Natty's beautiful desktop. Video was using about 10-15% of each CPU and acceleration worked well. The sound worked beautifully. I clicked on KNetworkManager and it displayed my ESSID, and a couple of my neighbors. I clicked on mine and it connected automatically. I browsed YouTube and played him a couple videos. Even running from a USB stick, Kubuntu was easily as fast or even faster than VISTA running from the HD. He was stunned.
He had been having so much trouble with his HP & VISTA that he was thinking of buying an iMac, which I priced out for him at $1,660 with the same capabilities as his HP. Kubuntu was free. His HP was running like a champ on Natty and showed none of the former symptoms! You could see the disappointment in his eyes as his excuse to his wife for the necessity of a new computer evaporated while his wife watched as his laptop behaved perfectly.
According to some folks Natty is not that good! Where did I go wrong?
