Help needed installing astrology software OpenAstro via the last UBUNTU repository:

UPDATE Here's 1 of the last archived versions: https://web.archive.org/web/20211202...openastro.org/ of openstro with instructions to install without a repsository if need be. Thank you claydoh My brain is hazy on how to do this the right way. As so ANY tips and clues that anyone voluntarily posts are duly appreciated, not demanded. No sympathy is asked for from anyone. Here's my last go round with MXlinux23 https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...on-4175746672/ , the people MXLinux forums https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic....d5b05ca4c32ef2 b01e64e2&start=20 of which considered mixing and matching Ubuntu/PPA repositories with their Debian and other repositories as heresy. It is frustrating to seem like I'm the only person who wants this old software updated and far more convenient. It's beautiful when it works and has a lot of potential to be improved. I went through this with the same PC I was tinkering with last Winter, except now here I'm on a clean Kubuntu install the MX destroied. Here again is the link to 1 of the last archived versions: https://web.archive.org/web/20211202...nastro.org/

This is saying that there are no files for ubuntu Noble (aka 24.04)

Note on that PPA's page how old the last update is.
Then check which Ubuntu releases it has packages for.

14 year old software sometimes stops working especially as dependencies die off.

Since there are no files for ubuntu Noble (aka 24.04), then this last archived version
        10-Oct-2018
        https://web.archive.org/web/20211020....org/?Download seems more than appropriate

Not that it matters, but I see no actually downloadable files on Archive ,org.

Also note that the archived download page states these packages are 32-bit, which itself adds another layer of outdated mess to the task......

you would need to specify the path to the file

Or make sure you cd to the dir in the terminal, and use sudo apt install ./name-of-the-package.deb

Or, easiest is to just double click the file.

            BUT
I and quite positive it won't work because other dependencies it needs no longer exist. It is 14 year old software that no one has updated since these needed packages and software went away.

            side notes:
MX linux, being based on Debian, won't support Ubuntu PPAs as they really don't work on non-Ubuntu based systems. There are enough differences between Ubuntu and Debian that they do not work. It isn't heresy, it is incompatible. Like trying to use a DeWalt battery on a Makita drill.

I don't believe this is impossible to install on Kubuntu: There's instructions for a generic installation here: https://web.archive.org/web/20190207....org/?Download

              Quote: "

              Generic Linux Installation
You can also manually build openastro.org, the pyswisseph module and the ephemeris files.
Make sure you can get these dependencies satisfied to run the program:
              • python3-dateutil
              • gir1.2-rsvg-2.0
              • gir1.2-gtk-3.0
              • python3-tz
              • python3-dev
              • python3-cairo
              • imagemagick
              • librsvg2-bin
               "
AND there should be back compatible versions of all those listed "dependencies" / software components

So manually install the deb packages , the ones that have amd64 or all in the filename, and not labeled dbgsym. it will tell you what is missing, but do be aware that any dep breakages , even if unlikely (depending on any missing items), are still possible, and adding any MX repo info to Kubuntu (or any other distro) WILL cause issues.

Qapt.....sucks. I forget that it still exists in 24.04
Use discover directly (right-clik and open-with) or use apt install or dpkg -i. I think Discover will have better erro reporting, and the command-line tools definitely will. A good guess is the this package needs one of the others. or there are dependency layers that may or may not be fill-able.

                        also missing one:

                        https://mirror.it.ubc.ca/mxlinux/mx/...stro.org-data/

but the version doesn't match the main application deb, so this may not work.

It would be nice if ubuntu team wouldn't flood updates with untested weird beta versions of something as elementary as the good old fassion terminal command line keyboard interface. re: konsole (the terminal program for KDE) Left click mouse won't even allow insert mode for the the cursor in front of text https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comment...or_in_konsole/ so I thought maybe Yakuaka (just as bad as Konsole), https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Terminal "GNOME Terminal is a terminal emulator application for accessing a UNIX shell environment which can be used to run programs available on your system. It supports several profiles, multiple tabs and implements several keyboard shortcuts." works better. And THAT and another sucks even worse. There's no way to zoom and adjust the text size. I never had this kind of buggy terminal software before 4 for 4.

This is what is spit in the terminal when I try and toggle the insert key
