Send SMS with KDE Connect

You'd have to be insane to prefer a terminal to compose sms's instead of using a nice gui like Pushbullet, Air droid, MySms, list goes on...

I used to be a big Air Droid fan, but the last time I used it I was disturbed by the apparent shady behaviour of the app. It was difficult for me to avoid using their servers to do stuff; I just wanted my computer to use the LAN to talk to my phone, as I had done for years.

For an app that has access to my contacts, I want completely above board behaviour and guarantees. Or, the assurance of an open source project like KDE. If I have significant texts to send, I'll be checking out kdeconnect-cli.

Pushbullet looks interesting, and more interesting to me in that it's "freemiumware" because maybe revenue from the premium version is how they make money, rather than selling my data.

As for the insanity of using the CLI, IMO that's a little like a straw man argument. I wouldn't consider typing the message on the command line, I'd fire up my favourite editor, as GUI as I please. It can fully automate running the command if I want, and I'd get automatic filing of my messages, and version control even. I often use my editor for longish or tricky CLI commands anyway, it's one or two keystrokes away.

You need the software that was linked in the first reply from https://github.com/Bajoja/indicator-kdeconnect/releases. The KDE "KDE connect" doesn't have all the features in the GUI that this one designed for regular ubuntu has.

I have tried almost every version from that link... all the same and useless. I don't understand the point of releasing a half built app. It's like releasing a new model vehicle without a steering wheel, side mirrors & radio player.
Uninstalled.

I will stick with Pushbullet for now.

I am yet to find a video of someone composing a new message to an existing contact using kde connect.

Edit: actually forget ICQ, just found out that if you use uBlock origin it will block the web site to download icq from due to its privacy setting.

Even though this thread is only a few months old, just highlighting that that github page is already gone. Perhaps it moved to Phabricator?

You can now set kde connect as your keyboard input on the phone and use the plasmoid in the taskbar to type text. Pretty useful for phone only messenger apps.
