    I found 14.04 had a driver that really didn't like my graphics card on my new laptop but 15.04 has been rock solid. I'll follow the upgrade path until 16.04 and then stick with LTS releases again.

Not so much luck with that lately though , feels like you need a degree in computer science to use linux or maybe its just my main comp is a bit to new i dunno.

        Anyhow thx for you advice its appreciated. :-D
        We were all there not long ago.

        My advice ? Tackle one thing at a time, solve one thing completely before moving to the next. It's too easy at this point to get overwhelmed trying to fix everything at once. Solve the hardware issues first - video, audio, etc. - before you move on to adding more software and other cool stuff. Search, take notes, and read a LOT before you do anything major and make backups. You will almost certainly at some point trash your install to the point of having to start over - we all have.

        Honestly, Plasma 5 is rather new and still somewhat buggy/lacking IMO. I normally would recommend an LTS (log Term Support) release for a newbee, but since you already dove in, might as well learn to swim!

            first thing after installing (ok after you poke around a bit ) is to open a konsole and do

            Code:
            sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
            their will prob be a lot .

            reboot then go to Kickoff>sistem settings>driver manager ,,,run it it should offer you an Nvidia driver .

                  ok im now on the new installation , all updates are done and iv installed the nvidia drives. im now looking at the tearing, this is what has worked for me before.

                  /etc/profile.d/kwin.sh
                  -------------------------
                  #!/bin/bash
                  export KWIN_TRIPLE_BUFFER=1

                  but if you know something that is better then now is the time ^^

                      also last thing for the night , thunderbird has no tray icon ! i have installed firetray but no icon at all so when i close/minimize there is nothing to click, i cant get it back up at all or kill it except for killing the process. this is a deal breaker if i cant figure it out as i have thunderbird always open but in the tray.

                        this was within an hour of me getting up and starting the computer, all whilst doing different things.

                        I do like the KDE DE , looks nice & feels nice to use but its unfit for purpose & before you say well that is a beta im only on the beta because i'v been through all the so called stable releases already.

                        thx all appreciate your help.

                          iirc plasma 5 can have some issues with the nvidia driver try using the open source one (installed by default ) and see if it stops crashing. In general posting screen shots of those crash boxes is not helping us help you. if you would like you can use the report bug button to make a bug report that will sent to the devs.

                          Try using 14.04 its the Long Term Support release for a reason .. and highly recommended while the kinks get worked out of plasma 5 (used on 15.04+)

                            i dont expect anyone to diagnose the crashes i was just showing how frequent and persistent they are , i could send them as a report but if i did that they would be flooded with reports.

                            which driver do you mean are you recommending the novella driver ? everything looks and moves terrible with that driver which is why i have to sort the drivers as almost the very first thing i do.

                            I have tried 14.04 it was the first distro i tried several months ago. I cant honestly remember exactly what caused me to drop it and try a different distro as iv been through so many now with varying problems, i suppose i might have learned a few tricks since then and should maybe take another look but iv been at this for far to long and i think i shall take a rest from trying to get linux installed and working for a little.

                            we shall see.

                            Thank you all.

                              Maybe it's me but I haven't read which version of the nVidia driver you use?

                              My early experience on 15.04 caused crashes /lock ups on anything newer than version nVidia 331.
                              Presently I get a good experience with version 355 (from the edgers ppa).
                              Well, that's for the video part, for me other bits of 15.04 are more troublesome...

                              PS, the open source NVidia driver is called nouveau.
                              Yes that's French

                                I have to say that I have had not trouble with 15.04 since I updated using the Kubuntu back ports repository. Maybe that's all that's needed here?
