Why does my computer connect to Samba Shares on bootup?

I am not sure this is posted in the correct area but it seems to be the most relevant since it is connecting to Samba Shares. I am currently booting from Kubuntu 14.04 CD in the "Try It" mode, not installed. My computer boots all on its own into Samba Shares and computers show up in Samba Shares, as well as in networking. Any suggestions on how NOT to connect to Samba Shares?

    • Kubuntu 14.04
    • If Kubuntu is installed, is it installed 'inside' of Windows (Wubi installation). No, the computer originally had Windows 7 Pro but not trying to dual boot at this time.
    • What version of KDE you are using. Platform Version 4.13.0
    • What version of Grub you are using. version: 0.97-29ubuntu66
Description-en: GRand Unified Bootloader (Legacy version)
    • What other Operating Systems are installed. None, just booting from Kubuntu 14.04 on CD.

If you're booting to the LiveCD it's configured to work in a specific way. SAMBA is installed and you can't uninstall or re-configure it because it's on a CD. This will not be the case if you decide to install Kubuntu to bare metal.

BTW: Forum etiquette for long prints outs is to enclose the pasted text with a scroll window by using either the CODE or QUOTE tags. You can go back and edit your first post and try it out. Simply edit your post, highlight the desired area, and hit the "#" button for CODE wrappers or the cartoon text balloon for QUOTE wrappers, and then save.

I appreciate the quick response and the tip regarding the CODE tags.

I get the same behavior whether Kubuntu is installed or not. This also happened to another laptop, an HP Pavilion g7.

Once you install, you can edit (as root) /etc/init/smbd.conf and comment out the line

        start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up)

just put a # in front of the line and save.

The first couple of tries I was not able to install Kubuntu because it stated there was not enough hard drive space. After pulling the drive out, reinserting, and then attempting again this morning, it installed. Also, for the last couple of weeks it had a Loop Device which is now gone as well. Something has changed but I haven't really done anything different.

I looked for the smbd.conf file in the location specified, and searched the entire drive, but it does not seem to be present. In Network I notice it is now showing my computer, which is different, and Samba Shares is showing a Workgroup with someone's PC that I don't recognize.

Perhaps later I can look for commands that can disable Samba via the Konsole.

I tried to find the file using the locate command but it didn't give a response, just a prompt waiting for a command. I also tried sudo, and I tried as root using su, and su - which just gave an authentication failure. Any suggestions? Samba shares is still making a connection.

I tried to upload an image but I got a message that stated I don't have permission to perform that action. Seems odd.

Actually, the Samba server is not installed in a default setup, that is the part that shares files. That is why don't have that config file. Being able to browse shared directories and files is, I believe, somewhat baked in to the file browser and file picker. I haven't found a way to disable being able to browse the network short of setting up an iptables firewall to block the ports being used for that.

What is the concern about seeing the folders that another machine has allowed to be seen and browsed? Maybe that can help lead us to a solution?

That is good to know but also makes me wonder because Samba Shares shows up with Workgroup, and on occasion Corp. with computers listed in it. In fact, over the last two weeks several computers have showed up in Samba Shares. I just re-installed Kubuntu a few minutes ago with no 3rd party drivers, and no updates. Same thing, Samba Shares showing a computer. The fact that it makes a connection at all makes me consider that my computer is being remotely monitored.

I admit, up until now I have only been a Windows user but I don't like my computer being discoverable by others in the motel. If I can see them, they can see me. Interesting though, it is not everyone in the motel, seems to be a few different PCs, and one MAC. Also in Network I have seen Kubuntu with a series of numbers following the name in brackets. Also, a couple that show up as servers; one called cookiemonster and the other was ONEMO-PC [Windows].

I don't know if this is normal but on bootup it shows 8 CPUs and 4 hotplug CPUs. The only recent change has been that I no longer have a 1.0 GB Loop Device in /cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs.

Also, just remembered, two of the computers showing up in my Network were not actually on the motel router. They showed up with WOL in front of the name. For example, the motel is Candlewood Suites, WOL CookieMonster, WOL Dan's iPhone (which is my iPhone, and WOL another computer.

I'm confused. If you don't want your windows computer exposed, turn off file sharing on the windows computer. I don't understand how the fact that your Kubuntu is finding other computers' samba shares means your Kubuntu is somehow being monitored - whatever that means. File sharing - at least in the linux world - is a two way street. What I mean by that is just because Dolphin is able to connect to other computer's shared files doesn't mean they can get into your system somehow. You would have to install, configure and activate samba server for that to happen. An open port on someone else's PC doesn't magically open a port on yours. Same goes for all other network services ; vpn, ssh, nfs, apache, etc. Remember the default behavior for linux is no connections to anything, you have to allow them.

"Seeing" that you're on the network would require them to scan the network for connected devices, but that still wouldn't give them any sort of access. And again, I don't understand how detecting a computer is attached to a network means they have just gained all kinds of access to it. This is simple enough to test. Boot your Kubuntu, open the share from your windows computer, then go to the windows computer and try and access your Kubuntu computer.

If you're still paranoid after all that, then install a firewall (ufw) and block access to TCP ports 139 and 445 and UDP ports 137 and 138.

The only way I know of to have your computer totally not detected on a network is to not attach to that network.

From what I've read, if one is connected to a hotel wifi or campus network, or some other open access point, dolphin's sidebar can get cluttered with entries. I've never seen that myself, but I'm guessing this may be what the OP is seeing, maybe?

We don't have a root account in Ubuntu land, use sudo for admin access
