Display problems with a Dell Latitude D820

My notebook is a Dell Latitude D820 with a 15.6 inch monitor, an Intel Centrino Duo-core x86_64 processor model 15 1GHz with 4 Gig of Ram and a 320Gb hard drive. The monitor is a 15.6" and is driven by Nvidia Quatro NVS 120 drivers.
I just upgraded from Natty to 12.10 with KDE 4.9.3 and GRUB 0.97-29 last night and the problem showed up right away.

My problem is the "natural setting " for my monitor is a LVDS 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz. I need to change it to 1024x768 or 1200x800 because my eyesight is bad and I can barely read it at 1920x1200 even with glasses. I have gone in and edited the xorg.conf file to add other monitor sizes, but the new 12.10 does not recognize the xorg.conf settings at all. I changed the nvidia-current-settings to updated nvidia settings, and that did not help either.

Can you tell me how to change the settings so I can read my notebook again, or do I just need to dump 12.10 and go back to natty where the drivers work fine. I am not a complete newbie, but this has got me stumped.

    Thanks,
    Robert

    A couple of comments:

    1. Your assumption that 12.10 does not "recognise" xorg.conf settings is incorrect. I myself use an xorg.conf file and it loaded first time without question. The problem lies with your configuration or your install. I was unaware that the Quatro GPUs had their own set of drivers, so I can't help you there. Xorg.conf is no longer created by default, but is still used automatically when present. I suggest a review of your xorg.conf and log files is a good place to start.

    2. There are several ways to temporarily or permanently change your resolution and they are covered by literally dozens if not hundreds of posts on this forum. Please search and attempt previously documented solutions prior to posting a request for help. This will help keep the forums from being overloaded with redundant postings.

    3. While your monitor will certainly display resolutions other than the native one, it almost always results in less-than-optimum clarity. You might consider installing the "Accessability" packages and enlarging font size instead of using a non-native resolution. Obviously, if you're satisfied with the lower resolution then do what works best for you.

Oshunluvr, thanks for your comments. I created a new xorg.conf with Compiz and the system still does not recognize it. There is nothing in the logs about this because there are no errors. It is not an error situation, it is that 12.10 only pulls the "Native Settings" and does not look at the Xorg.conf at all from what I can tell. There has to be a setting somewhere else besides in xorg.conf.

Compiz is not a KDE componant so it's likely going to be difficult to figure out what's happening if you're using it. I have no experience at all with compiz. It possible the upgrade path you've chosen has left some undesirable config files behind.

If you want to post your files I'll take a look. You'll have to copy the log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) and change it's ownership/group to your user. Then rename it .txt and attach it to a post. Do the same with /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Well, your xorg.conf doesn't have any resolution selected:

              Code:
              [COLOR=#333333]Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0; nvidia-auto-select +0+0"[/COLOR]
means to select the native resolution. You need to create modelines for the desired resolution(s). "gtf" will do it for you. Here's an example:

              Code:
              stuart@office:~$ gtf 1024 768 60

                # 1024x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 64.11 MHz
                Modeline "1024x768_60.00" 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync
Then set your metamodes to your desired options.

An alternate way to get your results is to leave xorg.conf alone and set your resolution using xrandr.

BTW: It's usually better to attach files to your post ("Go Advanced") rather than cut-n-paste them into a post. Much easier to read them off-line.

Sorry for the long files. I did not know how to attach the files, so I just pasted them in. I Tried your suggestions above and nothing worked for me. I replaced the xorg.conf with the original that has almost nothing in it. Then I ran Xrandr and here are my results.

                fuzzy@fuzzy-Latitude-D820:~$ xrandr

All 12.10 sees is the 1900x1200. I have spent two days screwing with this and still no resolve. so Kubuntu 12.10 is going in the trash later today and I am going to load another Distro that I know works on this computer. Eversince I changed this computer over to Ubuntu products, I have had setup issues of one sort ot another, and I am throwing in the towel on Ubuntu because the setups suck. It works ok most of the time, but going through setup is worst that Windows XP was when it first came out.

                Thanks for your help.
