type this into a command prompt
ls /dev/dsp*
The first letter above is a lower case L, not an i. Try pointing KDE to one of the dsp's listed there, if there are any. Usually kde will try the first one, which may not be correct. I have 3 listed, one for my motherboard, one for my sb audigy pci and the other is unknown but often is the default (doesn't work).
