    Hard Drive GParted Issue

    Hi, I have a IBM server x3100M4 Core i3-2100 3.1Ghz 2Gb with a SATA 1TB Simple-swap 3Gb/s Hard Drive.

I used to have vmware vsphere esxi and it worked out just fine with windows server and ubuntu server. But then i decided not to virtualize, so I tried to replace it with a install of Windows Server 2008 onto the machine.

On the windows installation I tried to format the HD and install the OS but I got this error: "windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style."
    There's some information here:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...0-1e0db62af309

So I tried GParted gparted-live-0.16.1-1-i486.iso booting from USB. And now it seems my HD drive is dead, GParted loads but after a while then I get this:

    devd[48]: timeout: killing '/sbin/modprobe -b scsi:t-0x00'
    More here:

    http://sdrv.ms/181tMYl

It keeps trying for 5 minutes like in a loop then just a black screen.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

    Thanks.

Windows is complaining because the install media is getting booted into BIOS mode but the disk's partition table is GPT.

My guess -- and it's only a guess -- is that the drive controller in that server isn't being recognized by GParted. You might need to find an IBM Server support forum for help with this one. If you boot into the server's firmware setup, can you find a setting to configure whether the controller is running in RAID or AHCI mode? If so, what is it set to now?

      Hi thanks for your answer.

Vmware sphere esxi created partitions, when trying to erase them and reformat with windows was a bad idea. I see those partitions but they are useless now.

Yes, I found the setting it's IDE.

      Any thoughts?

There "should" not be any issue using the 32-bit GParted on your 64-bit motherboard and CPU, but I've found too many instances of "should" being a false assumption to trust it. I would make the 64-bit live USB stick and try again, before moving to more drastic approaches. Personally I like Parted Magic because it has some other cool packages in addition to the latest GParted, including a nice GUI front end for smartmontools. The current release of Parted Magic offers you a 32-bit or 64-bit OS on its boot menu, so there is only a single download version.

Also, try changing the controller mode to AHCI.
