Windows 7 (and 8) will install on a UEFI machine in UEFI mode if you're using the original installation media. What are you installing from?

TBH, I'd recommend avoiding dual-boot. It's a hell of a lot of hassle. My preference is to run Kubuntu on the metal and Windows in a VM.

It is a slip streamed Win7 64 with SP1. That might be why. The original OEM disc might work. I hardly use Windows, but just wanted to experiment. I'm happy with Win7 in a VM.

Win8 Pro retail (installed first) and 13.04 works fine. I haven't turned on secure boot (don't want it), so I can't comment on that. My homemade Win7 disc was the problem. I can't stand Win8, so I will reinstall with my retail Win7 later. Windows creates a fat32 partition for /boot/efi, and U/Kubuntu creates fat16 by default. If U/Kubuntu is installed first, Windows won't use /boot/efi, and will install in legacy mode.
