Dolphin no longer shows photos on folders

Hi guys. Sorry to say I no longer use Kubuntu but changed to LMDE about two years ago. But I still enjoy using Dolphin file manager.

One of my favorite features in Dolphin was that it would display photos contained in a file folder on the surface of the folder. Very nice!

Recently, I upgraded from LMDE 6 to LMDE 7. AFAIK, Dolphin seems to no longer support this feature. I have another PC that still has LMDE 6 and Dolphin works nicely.

Dolphin on the older PC reports version 22.12.3 and the newer, upgraded PC Dolphin reports version 25.12.3. I found a deb packed with version 22 and it refused to install because
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libdolphinvcs5 (=4.22.12.3-1)
I don't know if anyone here enjoyed seeing the folder contents displayed on top of the folder but I sure did. Any ideas how to get this functionality back?

    Ken

Yes, debs need to be built for the specific distro (Debian) and the specific release of that distro.

So, Dolphin's settings don't show the options for this? It is not a feature that has gone away at all.

Make sure that folder previews are checked - normally it should be in most distros.

(Ignore that greyed-out option at the bottom; that's specifically for remote folders.)

BUT: You may need to install the component that actually creates these previews.
Debian does not install all the small bits in all cases, especially when not part of a full KDE setup. Common in many distros when using DE-specific tools in a different DE, actually. Keeps the bloat down.
Or your current desktop (Xfce I assume??) may need to be set to load something at login to start this service, maybe. But probably not.

I *think* you just need the package kio-extras but I may be wrong, or potentially you need more things, or perhaps different packages. This probably needs more Debian/LMDE experience to be sure, even though Debian and Ubuntu are *very* similar in structure and package naming.

Thanks for reply claydoh! In Software Manager I see Kio, Kio-extras, Kio-fuse and Kio-gdrive all installed. I've played with Dolphin Settings to no luck.

I bet the Mint forums will have more know-how on this one. Maybe you need the actual thumbnailer parts, I dunno.
kdegraphics-thumbnailers, but not sure if you need this or not. Or if it works outside KDE.

Or just use the flatpak version of Dolphin, which WILL have all the needed bits included.

Already tried the Flatpak version. It doesn't work either. I will explore your thumbnailers tomorrow. Thanks.

Ok, it might be a bug in your Plasma version, and X11 sessions. There are a couple of bug reports on this, though they seem to be related to the Oxygen theme, not the normal Breeze.
These were in the same general Plasma version that you are stuck with have in your Debian Trixie setup in LMDE 7.

OK, I just found another problem with Dolphin on LMDE 7. The File Associations" don't work. Dolphin doesn't have ANY associations! In Files(Nemo) file associations work exactly like they are supposed to, so it isn't System Settings/Preferred Applications. To get things done I will have to use Files(Nemo).

As a side note: I can't get my Profile/User Settings to update. I have a Ryzen 5 now.
