How to kill off a browser hijacker?

It was as easy as going into browser settings and deleting all the cookies.

My Google searches in Chromium are hijacked and sent to customsearch [dot] webshoppers [dot] co

How do I find and remove whatever is causing this?

How to prevent it from happening again?


Additional Info:

• Other search engines and other browsers seem to be unaffected
• It doesn't happen in Incognito Mode

Note: flushing the cookies didn't actually work. It only stopped the behavior temporarily.

The problem seems to have been a malicious browser extension.
