To make xscreensaver function normally and auto start do the following:

Xscreensaver requires X11 to function. If you have Wayland you need to install X11

    sudo apt update

    sudo apt-get install xorg openbox

Reboot computer and at login screen choose X11

    Then:

    sudo apt update

    Install xscreensaver:

    sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-data-extra

Go to start button/ settings/xscreensaver settings/ and cofigure per your preferances

    In the terminal type:

    sudo chmod +x /usr/share/xscreensaver/xscreensaver.desktop

    Hit enter

    Close terminal

Open Dolphin / Click view / check box beside "show hidden files"

    Go to '/usr/share/xscreensaver'

Put cursor over xscreensaver.desktop and right click/ choose "copy"

    Now, go to /home/your_user_name/.config/autostart

    Right click in autostart

    Choose past one file

    Close dolphin and reboot computer

    Xscreensaver is now working properly
