    On-board webcam not cooperating

    Newbie here! I'm dual booted now to Kubuntu 24.04 and I do like it however I cannot get built-in webcam working. So I'm ZOOM less! It works on the hated WIN11 side. I have tried Webcamoid, Kamoso, guvcview and cheese to ZERO success.

      Well De Boer from Zuid Afrika, this is Hans Koopman from Kanada. Thanks for tackling this issue. I typed in your suggested commands and indeed v41-utils is missing and just earlier v412-ctl was also not found.

          The last thing die.boer shows is how to install it if missing.

              That is v4l -- an "ell" not the number "1"

              Code:
              $ apt policy v41-utils
              N: Unable to locate package v41-utils

              $ apt policy v4l-utils
              v4l-utils:
              Installed: (none)
              Candidate: 1.26.1-4build3
              Version table:
              1.26.1-4build3 500
              500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble/universe amd64 Packages
              It is a bit easier to see (to me at least) when you aren't using the default font we have here on the forum:

              v41-utils
              v4l-utils

              I didn't see it immediately myself.

                Or copy paste the commands instead of typing it manually?

                    lol

                    i copied pasted my command ,and in terminal one can clearly see it's a "l"...

                    but if one copy paste it from terminal , it looks like a "1"

                    jp@jp:~$ v4l2-ctl --list-devices
                    Command 'v4l2-ctl' not found, but can be installed with:
                    sudo apt install v4l-utils
                    127 jp@jp:~$

                    so ya , the font is misleading

                      Thanks much Die.Boer and Claydoh. Using the "ell" instead of "1" is starting to get some results. On Webcamoid I'm getting an ever diminishing screenshot and while useless it does file it properly in Pictures. It sure isn't taking an image of a confused KDE Newbie. Kamoso not doing much of anything yet, but I think I'm making progress on tweaking this sleepy webcam.

                        oki ,shout if we can assist some more

                        just for interest, i myself use webcamoid (well very rarely in fact my webcam on laptop is taped over lol ) and don't have any issues when i do use it.
                        also notice i don't even have that v4l2 thing installed ...but yea , my webcam just works somehow

                          A vast majority of webcams are using the UVC driver, which is well supported in Linux. There still are those that don't.
                          And tools like Cheese and Kamoso are simply broken sometimes, and I stopped using them. If Guvcview or Camaractls isn't working well, then that might make things more fun.

                          If we'd get the lsusb info for the webcam, I bet we could find if there is something extra needing to be done specific to the hardware.

                          In Guvucview or Cameractrls, try switching between different pixel formats, if you have not done so already. If the preview works better in one of these, then you can use either to set that option, then try Zoom again.

                            This is still needed from you. The output will help in hopefully resolving your issue.

                              Cheese seems to have gone from 26.04, but now Kamoso works for me (it didn't some years ago).
