Audio is severely distorted through speakers

So, I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04. I can hear audio clearly enough through the slot connected to the sound card at the front of the computer, but the sound is of an insufficient volume. So, I plugged in my speakers, and I found that I have to turn it to it's almost full volume in order to hear any of the audio I'm trying to hear, and that audio is severely distorted by electrical buzzing. Any ideas of what to do?
    Thanks a million.

Open KMIX (the speaker icon in the panel) and click the mixer button.
    Click Settings, then configure channels.
Check the PCM item, then OK.
A new setting with a blue squiggly line should appear. Check the volume setting on this, it may be very low.
That was the problem on my system, and that fixed it.
