    Thanks, another great explanation.

Quite looking forward to the arrival of this enclosure, even if I mess it up completely I'll learn something.

So, I finally got round to taking it apart. What was inside isn't quite what I was expecting, I can't see an obvious place to take the connection piece off to re-house the actual drive part.

? I have never seen a connector like that before. A little Googling tells me that the six-pin thing is a proprietary Western Digital connector. Sigh. Why, why?

While we can't finish the experiment and move the drive to a standard SATA enclosure, it would seem reasonable to conclude that the Smartware stuff behaves as I previously described.

          Bloody typical, lol.

Ah well. One more reason I'll never buy a WD product.

Thanks for sticking with me through this one, it has been interesting!

I'm sorry to revive this post, but I have a question:

I can't make My Passport booteable, do you guys think that this Smartware is the problem? The disc is not even in the list when I try to boot it from the BIOS. I understand that the BIOS will try to boot from the primary partition always. Any advice?.

            Cheers

            --Edit--
Unfortunately the Smartware VCD make this disk not external bootable... I really feel angry because of that... .:@

The following external hard drives are not bootable on Intel-based Mac computers systems through FireWire (1394a/b):
            • All My Book (+SmartWare)
            • All My Passport (+SmartWare)
