Intel graphics card on my laptop. Tried the fixes posted at the ubuntu web-site as posted here

to decent effect. I also tried the 2.6.30 kernel for the "optimal" solution as outlined but it would not allow VMWare player to run, even if I reinstalled the player.
Tried again last night - there is a new version of VMWare player (2.5.3 bundle) which works with the new kernel so if anyone was holding back for that reason it's now fixed
