koffice or openoffice

hi, again,
I use openoffice, a lot. Kind of one of my 3 main apps, dictionaries and all the writting stuff i could find.
I was pondering if there are any adventages in passing to koffice,
to make it simple, koffice or OOo?

KOffice loads more quickly.
KWord can import and edit PDF files.
I think it also has more options for changing case (in OpenOffice, it's just uppercase and lowercase).

Some more added benefits:
KOffice is better integrated into KDE.
KOffice has a nifty little app called KOffice Workspace where you can work on multiple documents of different types (KWord, KSpread, etc.) without opening multiple windows. You can just use the tabs at the bottom to switch back and forth the documents. Really nice if you're working on separate but related documents.

However, OpenOffice.org is definitely more popular. It's also cross platform (works on any OS). It also seems that OpenOffice.org has better support for ODF than KOffice. Last time I checked, there were some problems in opening some ODT/ODS files in KOffice that I made in OO.o.

(But I'm using KOffice as my default, btw. )

if you have to share docs with ms word users, open office might be better. when i was using koffice 1.5 on suse, it could open .doc files but could not save files as .doc (ms word format). i know there are ways around this, such as rtf but sometimes that can scare less knowledgeable windows users.

is it intentional that koffice does not let you save in ms word format or was it a problem unique to me/suse/the suse package i was using?

I don't know if .RTF scares people (tell them .RTF can't carry viruses, and then see how scared they are of .DOC), but it has its limitations. For example, I don't think .RTF can handle embedded picture files.

well, i suppose i should have put "scares" as i did not mean it literally. but i think you know what i mean. there are many people who do not react well anytime they get something slightly "out of the ordinary".

I also can't seem to see any Save as MS Word Document feature. The only two ways to save for MS Word is either to save as a MS Write document or an RTF.

Now that you've mentioned it, it does seem strange that KOffice doesn't have that feature. But probably it's because of patent or licensing issues rather than a snob of MS Word format.

I have both installed (to keep my eye on both of them )...the more I use KOffice the more I like it...seems more intuitive and snappier (for me, at least).

Some of the invidual tools are more complete on openoffice than on koffice (and some seem the other way around, but I've never run into anything I couldn't do with either software...then again, my needs are fairly simple :P)

The lack of write support for some MSOffice formats is somewhat a minus for KOffice (Although as mentioned, there are ways around that). But I'm fairly sure MSOffice will support OpenDocument formats in the future.

Anyway, I encourage you to try KOffice...and choose by your own preference

well, you see, koffice not handling .doc is a problem for me. Most people don't use openformat, and don't know what to do with the files.
So I need the capability of "save as .doc"

in the other hand, how's the speelchecker and dictionaries in koffice?

Try Abiword. I prefer it to OO Writer. It starts fast and has a grammar checker, which Writer does not have. It can also save to .doc file extensions as well as open Word documents. Rich text format (rtf) is better supported in Abiword as well.

abiword? in my first linux - like 3 or 4 years ago - mandrake or rh i think, i tried it. what i remember of those days were long suffering nights of fighting agains linux,
like a nightmare...

how about hebrew dic? or spanish? speelcheker and dict for all 3?

but again, that could be just firefox's or yourself acting as a spellcheekkeerrhh, awake enough. and without being an analphabet like me, that need programs in 5 languages 'cos can't learn to write . LOL

maybe i can learn to write and then i'll notneed no dictionary, what u say?
