Playing .smil

I was just wondering if there is anything in the repositories that will allow me to play a .smil file?

The wikipedia article you referenced in your post, lists the software you can use. In particular, helix-player is available in the (K)ubuntu Universe repositories. Try it, you'll like it (even if you never see a .smil file).
