I often start with "reply with quote", then break the quote up as I reply to the different points in the quote. In principle the extra effort to copy and paste and add one more set of quote tags is minimal, but "reply with quote" gets one started.
I suppose Snowhog you're not a fan of top-posting (I loathe it) and see a quote of a long post followed by a brief, monosyllabic response as akin to that.
