I just found out why with starting the prog vial konsole:

"qt.qpa.wayland: Wayland does not support QWindow::requestActivate()"

After switching to Plasma X11 all is fine.

Question: Is it solvable on Wayland?

There is a workaround to tell it to use the desired icon instead of the generic one, either by a custom kwin rule or edit of the menu entry, I just need to find it.
The fix on the developer end probably is not overly difficult, but IANAP

The worst case it to boot to an X11 session.

        Okay:
        Based on THIS, among others:

Create a rule as described. The exact location in System Settings will be a little different now.
Use the “detect properties” to get the basic values.
Click on all items in the popup with a checkmark (2 items) to add them. You should end up with four items.
Edit the Description to something you want.

Then "add property >> Desktop File Name.

Edit things to match the screenshot
Change net.damonlynch.python3 to the name of the actual .desktop file: net.damonlynch.rapid_photo_downloader
Change "Window types" to "All Window Types" in the dropdown.

Apply, close and restart the application, and it should work.

Hmm I do not know where the original post content went.

I merged the two as they were in different Topics but were for the same problem in neon.
