    Making Synaptic the default and removing kpackagekit

    Is there anyway to make synaptic the default package manager and remove kpackagekit for karmic?

    No. You are condemned to face kpackagekit, and to suffer its indignities and inscrutable interface, for as long as you run Kubuntu.

    Sometimes the temptation is irresistable.

    Assuming you have installed synaptic, the very simplest thing you can do is learn to hit Alt-F2 and type in the little window "kdesudo synaptic". It will pop up a password entry window, and you type in your password, and synaptic will then open for you. It's really a very simple little routine. You do not need to remove kpackagekit -- it might pull out other packages that you need, so I would advise just leave it alone and use the Alt-F2 routine that I wrote above.
