Speed up Kubuntu

Hi,
I'd like to know some tips and tricks to speed up kubuntu.
My pc is an old PIII 933 with 512 mb ram.
I already use i686 kernel and I've reduced visual effects.

You could always try prelinking. I did that, and everything sped up quite a bit.

I installed prelink days ago but nothing changed :cry:
Instead hdparm works good.

Prelink definately helps,
I have a Thinkcenter P4 2400 with 1 gig RAM and kubuntu runs very decently on it.

Is prelinking effective with a my PC spec (Duron 950 MHz, 192 MB of RAM)? Or is there any other way to optimize Kubuntu in my PC

This is a nice tip for saving ram:

sudo vi /etc/inittab

you'll find these lines:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6

modify commenting like this:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
#3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
#4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
#5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
#6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6

save and reboot.

These are all the virtual console (ALT+FX), this modification stated that leave only two virtual console instead of 7 and save much ram

prelink didnt help here, although I did tighten down the amt of consoles.

I have found that installing Powertweak seemed to open up mine (K6-2 500) I know, I know old machine but what better one to test on. Kubuntu runs almost as fast as XP on this old thing. Also run BUM boot manager and Sysv ( nI like Sysv better) Disabled soom services and start-up faster. Seems like running programs also faster as I have limited logging daemons at start.

Being a Linuxaholic for 5 years; yea still a nOOb , I never heard of prelinking... Gonna check it out though.

Also, if it runs slow on your hardware, maybe use a stripped down version. My first 'Linux box' was a Celeron 333, and it ran Mandrake fine. Well, until they became loaded with graphics and stuff...

Anyrate, stick with it, Linux will free you..

definite noob question here...what if you don't have an /etc/inittab folder in your system. I went through Konsole and it told me it was a "new file" Went thru Konq. to look for it and it doesnt exist.

did i screw something up here? my machine hasn't crashed, but every once in a while it'll hang for a few seconds if i have to much stuff running at once....
