    Can't Configure a printer

    Hello all

My problem is that I can't print anything in my HP Deskjet 820C.
I configure the printer, but when i trie to print a test page nothing appened......

I already tried to print from a couple of programs like OO or Firefox but nothing appens also.

Does anyone have the same problem ?

    Thank you in advance.

    Best regards

    André

    Re: Can't Configure a printer

I usually have to wait around 5 minutes for my printer to kick into action but after that it works fine.

I have an HP PSC 1315.

      How is your printer connected?
I had a similar problem yesterday trying to configure my HP V40xi all-in-one.

You need to have hplip and cups installed (hplip has all the HP drivers).

My printer wasn't working even though it was showing up in the add printers wizard. I selected the proper USB devise at first, and was having the same problem you are.
I then tried a fresh 'add printer' and realized that the same printer was also showing up as being connected to a parallel port (which it's not). I selected this printer instead of the USB connected and it workded fine.

      I hope this helps you.

        Re: Can't Configure a printer

        Hello

My printer is connected by parallel port.

I tried to install it with the HPLIP drivers, but my printer (Deskjet 820) does not apear in the list.

i tried to install the printer with the CUPS web interface but i don't know the login....

Does anyone have any more ideias ?

        Best regards

        André

          Re: Can't Configure a printer

Don't look in the HPLIP list. Look in the HP list. You'll find your Hp820 there and I believe it should install.

I forgot to explain how to get into CUPS.

It's a bit of a mess in Kubuntu, I think, but if you follow these steps, it should work:

As root, edit the /etc/group file:

            sudo kwrite /etc/group

Find the line that starts with "shadow" and at the end of the line (no spaces), add the word cupsys (if there is a user name at the end of the line, you need to add a comma between the user name and cupsys, but again no spaces).

Now you need to restart cups:

            sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Now, in your browser, enter an address of localhost:631/admin

You'll be asked for user name and password...just use your username and password.

Should put you into the CUPS system.

              Re: Can't Configure a printer

              Thank you for your help.

The bug is that i configure the printer with the drivers in the HP list (not the HPLIP) but when I trie to print nothing get's printed....

I made the chages you told but I still can't login into cups admin
              But I have new information:
In the cups "Manage Printers" page there is an error information under the printer.
              It says:

              Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs.
"Unable to open parallel port device file "/dev/lp0": Permission denied"
              Device URI: parallel:/dev/lp0

Does this mean anything to you ?

              Thanks
              Best regards
              André

                Re: Can't Configure a printer

Permissions problem indicates that your /dev/lp0 is only permitting root access.

                Try this:

                sudo chmod 777 /dev/lp0

Then try printing. You shouldn't get the permissions error.

Yes, I no more get the permissions error.....

But steel no test page printed....

I trie a test page, and the cups says is processing it, but no page leaves the printer......

What more can i do ?

Thank you very much for all your help!

                  Best regards

                    Re: Can't Configure a printer

First, try removing the installed printer and re-installing. When you install it this time, when you get to the window that asks for the local port, don't just assume that you want the top one (parallel port #1). Scroll past the USB port list and see if there's a parallel port showing an HP (that's your printer). If there is, select that one as your port.

Let me know what HP's are showing in the local port list if this doesn't work.

                      Re: Can't Configure a printer

Ok I tried to install the printer again in both ways (user and administrator) but none of them worked......

in the window you refer I have:

                      Parallel Port 1 - Hewllett-Packard Deskjet 820C

                      Serial - nothing

                      USB - USB Printer #1
                      USB Printer #1
                      ...
                      USB Printer #16

Others : - HP no device found
                      - Parallel Port #1 - Canon
                      - Parallel Port #1 - Epson

I choose the first one, and I tried to input "HP:/dev/lp0" to force the use of the Others option, but I doesn't work also!

                        Re: Can't Configure a printer

Did you remove the printer and re-install it? It looks like there is still a queued job.

I'm sorry, but I don't think I can add anything more to what I've tried. I don't know why it's not working. Seems strange. If you don't get any better answers here, consider consulting the Ubuntu forums. They specific Kubuntu forums and you can search the entire site for possible problems like yours and their solutions.

Yes I re-install the printer and tried a test print page....

Thank you for all your help!
I couldn't solve the problem, but the important was that I know more than then....

                          Again... thank you!

                          Regards

                            Re: Can't Configure a printer

I have had the same trouble with permissions on /dev/lp0 I set it to 777 using sudo chmod 777 /dev/lp0 and the printer will start to work. However, if I reboot the computer I have to do it again because it seems those permissions do not survive a reboot.

If anyone has a more permanent fix for the permission problem let me know.

                            Thanks,
                            Tom

                              Re: Can't Configure a printer

I suffer from the same problems with a hp busines inkjet 2200. The strange thing is that this printer runs fine on Sarge 32 but refuses on Breezy 64. It processes the job, I can see it on the front panel of the printer, but no paper comes out.

                              Any suggestions welcome!
