    Installing GNOME broke kdm

(Note: This isn't a call for help; I reinstalled Kubuntu.)

I installed Kubuntu 5.10 from DVD and then decided to have a look at GNOME. Apparently I was supposed to "apt-get install gnome-desktop" but instead I used "apt-get install gnome" (and then used Synaptic to install a bunch of other GNOME-related apps).

Afterwards, kdm would start, I'd log in, the screen would blank, and kdm would come right up again. ("dpkg-reconfigure kdm" didn't help.)

    Gdm worked fine.

I found another person who had the same problem, here (it's in French, but basically says the same thing).

Personal opinion: gdm would be OK if (a) one could get rid of that Fedora-like full-screen theme and (b) configure it to allow root logins.

    <edit> Make that "ubuntu-desktop," not "gnome-desktop". </edit>

    Re: Installing GNOME broke kdm

I too have been fighting the same problem, for weeks now.
    I haven't broke down and reinstalled...yet.
    xdm and gdm work fine.
I can set up an .xinit file in a user dir and 'exec startkde' ok.
I've uninstalled and re-installed kdm several times.
kdm allows me to select the session and login, then reverts
to the login screen every time.
Doesn't matter which user (even created a new user)
Doesn't matter what session I choose (xfce4 icwm gnome kde)
Login screen goes black, appears to be starting, then reverts to
    the kdm login screen again.
    Currently I am using gdm.
    Any suggestions?
    Curt

Wonder if "apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop" (and/or maybe kubuntu-default-settings) would have any effect.
