I have tried a few versions of Linux (RedHat, Ubuntu, LinuxMint) and I really love Kubuntu. The KDE interface has everything and is a joy to use. I have a couple of older Windows computers that I want to reuse for basic web access. In particular I want to use them to access secure banking websites. One is an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz with 747 MiB of RAM (that's what Kinfocenter tells me). I also have another old system with only 512 MiB RAM. So this is a two-part question:
1. What components of the OS can I disable and/or remove to make the system run snappier with the slower hardware? Remember, all I really need on here is a web browser.
2. What kinds of steps can I take to "harden" the system to make it less susceptible to malware?
Thanks!

ram is key here, so my minimum recommendation is 1gb. If you mostly just surf and browse, then probably anything over 512 is ok.
malware in general does not target or effect linux, neither do viruses.
