    Dell refunds OS cost

    Hi

    Re: Dell refunds OS cost

I just read another event regarding the same topic from 1998 with Toshiba from a guy from Australia. It seems to work, but can't guarantee anything. I spoke with Dell this evening, and they would sell a system without an operating system at a lower cost, however, not that much lower. I would like to see someone from the US give it a shot and see what happens. I am not about to be a guinnea pig when I am broke ;p

Dell does not make it easy, and they do not guarantee to return your money, if you decline to accept the Windows EULA.

A few years ago when they announced the n-series (no operating system) computers I decided to take a look. After a great deal of trouble on the Dell website, I managed to customize two systems to have exactly identical hardware, not the hardware I wanted, but the closest I could get in the limited range of choices of the n-series. The n-series system was exactly $19US (including tax) cheaper than a standard Dimension system with exactly the same hardware, so I didn't buy it.

The article linuxwizard referenced quotes a refund of $160 for windows. The other $141 that you don't get back with an n-series computer must be the cost of removing windows from the machine so that they can sell it as an n-series box.

I am typing this on a custom built computer from a local OEM builder. He would have charged me about $75 more for winXP, if I had wanted it, than he did for installing Kubuntu. I wanted him to install the OS, since then he couldn't say, "Well, it worked when we tested it here."
