Fortunately I quit smoking 40 years ago, have a steady retirement pension, a rooftop terrace in my apartment, a lot of books, plenty of music, two working computers, a mild climate, and most importantly, a living family, two of whom live with me. My wife is doing fine so there's always good company. I feel very lucky. After I retired we visited France, Italy Morocco, China, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Chile and a number of other places which are all suffering from Covid-19. Got there just in time! This will pass, but I hope people will have learned something from the experience. You can never be too careful.

An interesting comment from an YNC small businessman about the closure of businesses:

          Hi
          I'll keep this comment short.
The GreyGeek, of course, lol posted a VERY important piece of information without referring directly thereto.

          To wit: COVID-19 RNA

notice the latter part of the name RNA.

what he did not post was the OTHER part of the moniker which is "novel".

The "novel" is one important part which refers, indirectly, to how it "works" which is the "RNA" part.

Fundamentally what "novel" means is that it is something that occurs in ANIMALS but NOT HUMANS BUT... has now "jumped" to humans.

The latter part is what most people have heard.

The problem is the "RNA" thing... it is part of the whole Chromosome / gene / allele(one version of the trait of the gene) / DNA - RNA.

The human body does not, yet, even know that it is there when infected by one of the little "prongy" ghings on the virus. the body just goes ahead with stuff until the DNA duplicates in "mitosis" ( cell division ) and then when the RNA get involved with that the virus "steps in and takes over ( kind of ) and starts "replicating ( fancy word for duplicating) in the body... and then you get the "bad flu".

The "reason" that this is spreading "so quickly" is YES BLAME THE STOOPID HOOOOMANS... is that since the body does not "know" that the NOVEL virus in inside it just lets things "proceed" that is the thing about people "being carriers" ( asymptomatic ) ... After a while there are so many of the virii in the body that people become "symptomatic"...

And it gets very complicated in that "the ends of the DNA strand" can easily MUTATE... so much so that there is a "kind of" new term...it is "slippery"... it just mutates very quickly.

What the Dem governors are NOT saying and that Trump has NOT said is that...the thing has ALREADY mutated... the original "S" strain and the newer "L" strain.

THIS ALL GET VERY COMPLICATED...it turns out that the S strain is "milder" and the L strain is the "worse" one...

There is a whole huge debate about humans intervening (that was the discussion in Britain which was ...hey let it run it's course... yeah some people will die but hey thousands die "of the flu" already just let it get into the population and we develop a "shot" like for the flue" )

But media hysteria blew that one up...

The other thing is that ...again... it spreads readily by breathing etc.

AND ANOTHER THING is that is just "destroys lungs" if it is the L strain.. which is obvious and tragic...

So... what is the IMPORT of this big long, which was intended to be short. post ?

The thing has "apparently" mutated "so fast" and "goes unnoticed" that...we really could just have "wave after wave" of this thing...i mean... several "waves" a year...not to riff on Dr. Fauci...

I mean here is a simple thing... we talk about "social distancing"...well...think about "ball room dancing"...that is just about as up close and personal one can get in a "social setting" where "a single person" dances with another "single person"..and NEITHER knows the other except that...yeah I saw the person here last week...at a big ballroom setting...

There is talk now about that...'when" we get to some kind of "test" that is literally a "swab" that "first responders" can wear a bracelet showing that they are not contageous...

When will "the media" start screaming that "everybody' should wear a "bracelet"...

Well...kind of like back in the Nam... that "young lady" in the "hooch" over there on the other side of the fence had a placard on "her" hooch that verified that THE U.S government had tested her "last week" and she did not have the Syph or the Gon or whatever...

BUT...what about all the customers she had serviced BETWEEN the test and...when the serviceman accompanied her to the hooch?

This could literally turn into a "mare's nest"...

So, are the "paranoiacs" ...just going to spend the rest of their lives in their apartment?

          sigh...

Thanks for the VERY informative addendum, Woody!

The other thing I didn't stress is the N95 masks that all the experts say we should or should not be wearing in public, depending on who you listen to. The "95" part means that the mask stops only 95% of the particulate matter passing into OR out of the mask. So, if a person who has COVID-19 exhales through the mask 1 out of 20 viral particles gets released into the atmosphere. Say, 100,000 viral particles are exhaled with each breath, then 5,000 viruses per breath becomes airborne. The average adult has 12-18 breaths per minute, and if that adult is infected then they will be releasing 50,000 to 75,000 viruses per minute. It only takes one. IF the infected person coughs the force of the expelled air can lift the sides of the mask off of the face, allowing many more virus particles to become air born, say, 500,000.

This is probably the real reason why doctors like Dr. Perencivich say that people should not wear the masks. But, keep in mind that N95 masks are better at filtration than Level 3 surgical masks. Even N100 masks are rated at filtering only 99.97% of particulate matter. Even those masks won't be certified if they do not have a FULL FACE seal. And, the 99/95/100 classification system only applies to particulates down to 2.5 micrometers in size. The COVID-19 virus is 0.1 micron in diameter. Let that soak in. That's why infected people being treated in well equipped hospitals are being put into plastic hoods, sort of like 1950 space helmets, that have two hoses, an intake that supplies Oxygen, and the outtake that purifies the evacuated air to protect the hospital staff.

AFAIK an RNA virus doesn't stay inside your body forever while a DNA based virus does live with you for the rest of your life. Since Covid-19 is said to be an RNA based virus, there are good chances to survive or even not show any symptoms. Still, the latter could be a bit problematic for people over 60...

By the way, 6 millions of masks Germany had ordered to help people or medical staff protect themselves just disappeared in Kenya, at their airport to be more specific...

Did white elephants at the airport steal the masks?

I might also add that China started relaxing its extreme measures by ending the quarantine in Wuhan, Hubei gradually. Even so a doctor has contracted the virus there...

COVID-19 dies after 4-5 hours -- not true

The experts have been telling us that the COVID-19 virus that has settled on environmental objects (tables, chairs, couches, TV, computer keyboards, etc...) usually die withing 4-5 hours. The CDC has reported that they found live COVID-19 virus in the rooms of passengers SEVENTEEN DAYS after the passengers had left the ship.
Available statistical models of the Diamond Princess outbreak suggest that 17.9% of infected persons never developed symptoms (9). A high proportion of asymptomatic infections could partially explain the high attack rate among cruise ship passengers and crew. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted (Takuya Yamagishi, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, personal communication, 2020). Although these data cannot be used to determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces, further study of fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 aboard cruise ships is warranted.
A two week quarantine won't be enough time to determine if a person is infected or not. I suspect that giving this evidence the quarantine period will be extended to 21 days. And just being without symptoms doesn't mean you are not infected. There are several tests which can determine that. The sputum test is one:
CDC 2019-nCoV Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first authorized a COVID-19 test created by the CDC that can detect viral genetic material.2

If you need this test, a healthcare provider will collect a sputum sample as well as nasopharyngeal (nasal passages) and oropharyngeal (back of the throat) swab samples to send to an authorized laboratory for testing.3 The swab samples are collected by swabbing the secretions from the back of the mouth and the nose.

If you have this test, your sample will be sent to an approved laboratory to be tested.
Here in Lincoln, the mayor has just announced that gatherings of more than 10 people at any one location are banned, and compliance will be enforced by law.

In sunny Costa Rica... Fine, it's windy as well... we're under virtual lockdown!
Tourists aren't welcome, they'll get rejected. Foreign nationals will be rejected, especially Nicaraguan, for we don't know whether or not they're infected already.

Legal residents and refugees that leave the country will lose their migratory status by default. (Especially useful to prevent Nicaraguan from coming back after spending their vacations in their own country.)

Flights have not been cancelled, unless airlines just stop flying to Costa Rica.

Love to visit parks, beaches and national parks? You better think it twice! You could get kicked out and fined.

Wanna drive after 10 pm? Better save some $40.00 just in case an officer stops you to check your papers.

You can go out to walk for a while, let your dog do its weird and unclean stuff outside, go buy groceries or even batteries or toilet paper. The latter vanishes early in the morning at supermarkets anyway...
You as an individual, you as a group will be scattered by the police.

OK, now it doesn't sound as virtual as I first thought. :s

The President and the Health Minister don't expect the crisis to be over after Easter. The Health Ministry forbids all public gatherings before next September.
